About this listen
Born into wealthy family, heiress Mallory Edwards honorably marries John Barron to fulfill a family obligation. Although he seems charming at first, she soon discovers that he is a beast of a man. Abandoned on her wedding night, she survives by her wit and resourcefulness until her errant husband's debts became too much for her to overcome.
Facing debtor's prison, Mallory won't rest until she finds John and nullifies their marriage. But he may not be the villain she believes him to be.
Author Cathy Maxwell has been a finalist for the prestigious RITA award from the Romance Writer's of America. Narrator Vanessa Moroney lends a special radiance to Maxwell's tale of bedlam and bliss.

Poor
The story presents an intriguing premise, but the execution felt sluggish. While the hero’s redemption arc gradually unfolds, it drags the story along at a pace that makes it hard to stay fully engaged. The heroine is likable but doesn't stand out as memorable.
One of the main issues with the novel is the lack of research into certain historical aspects. While I understand that creative freedom plays a role in storytelling, there were some inaccuracies that were hard to overlook. For instance, the heroine describes another character as autistic—a term not coined until 1911, yet the story is set in the early 1800s. Anachronisms are a big no for me. Also, the hero's inheritance plotline completely ignores England's strict entailment laws, which governed property inheritance during this period.
There are sex scenes in the novel.
