Publisher's Summary
"I knew it would be like this...like finding something I didn't know was missing." (Luke)
Note: New cover added 12/2016 but no new content
Author Gray Hawthorne has it all and he’s on the verge of having even more. His best-selling detective novels are being turned into a movie series that will make him a household name and he’s rubbing a lot more than just elbows with Hollywood’s elite. Money, fame, and good looks mean an endless supply of men, both groupies and celebrities alike, which suits Gray just fine. He’s smart enough to know that his five minutes in the spotlight will be just that and he plans to enjoy every moment. Until he gets the devastating news that threatens to steal everything away...
Army Ranger Luke Monroe lives and breathes the military. They’re the family he never had and a life without his brothers-in-arms is unfathomable. But the ultimate betrayal has Luke on the run and a twist of fate leads him to the small town of Dare, Montana to seek help from the foster brother who saved him once before. Only the brother he’s searching for isn’t the man he finds and he has no choice but to keep running. Until an encounter on the side of the road with a stranger changes everything.
The last thing Gray wants when he seeks refuge at his cabin in the secluded Montana mountains is company but a run-in with the mysterious and very straight Luke has Gray offering the damaged soldier a place to regroup. And since a physical relationship isn’t even on the table, Gray finds himself enjoying something he hasn’t had in a long time...a real friend.
But what happens when friendship just isn’t enough? When a man who’s only been with women begins to crave more?
With one man running from his past and the other running from his future, will finding each other be enough to bring them peace?
Can be listened to as a stand-alone story - no cliffhangers.
This series crosses over with some of my other series, so for the most enjoyment, they should be listened to in order, but it is not required. You can find the correct listening order at the beginning of each audiobook. I've also bundled all my series in the correct listening order under the title of A Family Chosen: The Protectors and Barrettis.

Another really good one in the series
I think book 1 is still my fav but I liked this one a lot more than book 2. Lots of plot turns to keep things interesting and an emotional rollercoaster (in a good way). All the feels.
I loved both the MCs and thought they went well together and had great chemistry.
There are mentions of previous characters and the one MC Gray was briefly mentioned in the other book as the author that flirted with Dane and ultimately led to him getting with Jax and in this book Luke says hes Reeses (from book 1) brother but they drifted apart when Reese left the military, but really you could read this as a standalone no problem. However, after reading the previous book I did really like Gray and was looking forward to this book. It takes about 4-5 hours to read and I actually found it so good that I read it twice in one week.
Luke was supposedly straight and it was a gfy situation for him and I found it unrealistic that he would just jump into that first intimate scene without any hesitation. However I didnt really give it much thought at the time. The book was just so captivating that it just worked. It did stick in my mind as I'm writing this though. It's this small thing that stick out and the fact that book 1 is still my fav storyline that make me leave off half a star.
I am definitely going to keep reading this series. It's not too often that a series can keep up it's greatness with each additional book but Sloane seems to have a gift in that department.
I love Michael Pauley/Dean's voice. He could read anything and I'd listen but I just gave him 4 stars this time as there wasn't a whole lot of distinction in the voices and I know that can be a downer for some. I do like it when Michael puts in more of an effort with the voices but for me he gets 4 stars for the sound of his voice and the emotion he puts into his work.

Beautiful, Inspirational
5 Blue Roses

Narrator Michael Deans’ voice perfectly suited for the army ranger Luke and author Gray of gay romance. Michael was able to capture all the emotions overflowing in this story and I found myself reaching for the tissue box a few times. He expertly performed this high angst love story leaving me hanging on every word in one sitting.
This was in my opinion one of Sloane Kennedy’s best in this series. It can be listened to as a stand alone, but it would be much more enjoyable to listen to in reading order, as the author intended.
I don’t want to divulge much more as I don’t want to spoil the enjoyment for other.
I recommend this audiobook absolutely. It’s is jam packed full of tragedy, fear and overcoming all that. It’s very inspirational.
Happy Listening
