Publisher's Summary

Finding Stevie is a dark and poignant true story that highlights the dangers lurking online.

When Stevie’s social worker tells Cathy, an experienced foster carer, that Stevie, 14, is gender fluid she isn’t sure what that term means and looks it up.

Stevie, together with his younger brother and sister, have been brought up by their grandparents as their mother is in prison. But the grandparents can no longer cope with Stevie’s behaviour so they place him in care.

Stevie is exploring his gender identity, and like many young people he spends time online. Cathy warns him about the dangers of talking to strangers online and advises him how to stay safe. When his younger siblings tell their grandmother that they have a secret they can’t tell, Cathy is worried. However, nothing could have prepared her for the truth when Stevie finally breaks down and confesses what he’s done.

Enjoyed the story line

Even though it’s likely a lot of this is exaggerated(I feel like it’s loosely based on “Stevie’s” experience), the story line was very good and mostly well written. Although it worked out in the end, and Ms. Glass admittedly has much more experience than me, it was sometimes frustrating in how Stevie’s discipline (or lack thereof) was handled. He was allowed to disrespect foster and biological family members repeatedly without consequence of his actions. However, I did like how the foster family stuck to their resolutions regarding supporting Stevie and his teenage like wrongdoings. Normal everyday occurrences can have a dramatic effect on a young teen, never mind the trouble Stevie found himself in. Without his biological family’s true support, he needed the backup the Glass family gave him.
Always enjoy Cathy Glass’s stories.

Least favourite

This book was infuriating. It was far fetched and not realistic at all. I really didn’t enjoy it.
