About this listen
London, 1881
Once the flames are ignited...
Miranda Ellis is a woman tormented. Plagued since birth by a strange and powerful gift, she has spent her entire life struggling to control her exceptional abilities. Yet one innocent but irreversible mistake has left her family's fortune decimated and forced her to wed London's most nefarious nobleman.
They will burn for eternity...
Lord Benjamin Archer is no ordinary man. Doomed to hide his disfigured face behind masks, Archer knows it's selfish to take Miranda as his bride. Yet he can't help being drawn to the flame-haired beauty whose touch sparks a passion he hasn't felt in a lifetime. When Archer is accused of a series of gruesome murders, he gives in to the beastly nature he has fought so hard to hide from the world. But the curse that haunts him cannot be denied. Now, to save his soul, Miranda will enter a world of dark magic and darker intrigue. For only she can see the man hiding behind the mask.

2012, RT Book Reviews' Seal of Excellence, Winner
"Callihan has a great talent for sexual tension and jaw-dropping plots that weave together brilliantly in the end."—Diana Gabaldon, New York Times bestselling author
"Beauty and the Beast meets Phantom of the Opera (with hints of Carrie and an abundance of Egyptian mythology) in this gripping, intoxicating story, simmering with incendiary sensuality and featuring a heroine who risks all to save the man she loves. An exceptional debut and the first of what promises to be a compelling series."—Library Journal, starred review
"Compulsively readable...a compelling Victorian paranormal with heart and soul."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

[slaps hand onto book] this baby has everything!
It's been a very long time since I've read this book, so I decided to try out the audiobook, and gosh, I was not disappointed! The writing is, in two words, absolutely lovely. The narration equally so. The author's ability to transport you to Victorian London is SO well done and the characters are three dimensional and delicious. This book has charm, humor, intrigue, slow burn romance, and spice (and it's well written to boot!). If you want a Phantom of the Opera/Beauty and the Beast type vibes, then this book is for you! it's got everything: arranged marriage, masked brooding male lead with a secret/heart of gold, charming and witty female lead, ballgowns, magic, mystery and murder!
There's a lot of historical romance with a magic twist on the market, and I believe everyone should give this a shot! As a debut, you can tell the author put her heart and soul into every page. The description is poetic but not overdone, and the dialogue. The dialogue! So many iconic lines had me texting my friends at 2am losing my mind (in a good way, I swear!) "Christ, Miri, murder and knife-wielding assassins aside, you are the greatest adventure of my life."
Like I'm supposed to be normal after reading that? nuh uh! I'm gonna go bonkers over this line for the next few weeks.
I don't know if the author reads these reviews, but Kristen if you're reading this, I LOVE THIS BOOK. I know you're mostly writing contemporary stuff, which isn't always my jam, but I think your writing could change that for me. I look forward to reading (and listening) to the rest of your books!

Meh
Tedious. I can’t say I could predict what would happen next. I just didn’t care. I’d return this book but I can’t figure out how.
