Character Suicide

The book starts with a hurricane a believable scenario and reason for the zombie plague to spread although giving them the ability to drown makes them the weakest version of zombies I have seen yet as they are slow version to. I was unaware this was the third book in the series until I was halfway through although it seems the books while in the same universe but different characters.

The preformance is fine I have nothing to complain only a man but he does his job and puts some good emotion for the male characters at least.

The characters all start out likable and their is enough motivation their to push the plot forward. Not the best I've seen but above most works I've read. I liked the chief Shaw and for 2/3s of teg plot they are consistent. The main female lead was adequate as well coming into the mother lion quite believably. Some characters are introduced but never show up again which could be attributed to the other books which I did not read. My problems lay further on with characters seemingly becoming the worst version of themselves without much buildup.
The plot is a fine get out scenario I wish their was more to trying to save the city but it's quickly established that their is no hope and the government is not going to help and was inifectve with the support they did give. So they have to run and many die trying to get out.

Why so low? My dislike has to do with the ending and characters changing in the end of the book.

Some Spoilers Ahead
I did not like the ending or last third of the book.
First off I can understand why the Shaw's would want the money and the book does a good job justifying it to fit their ideals.

My problem is that my favourite character Mark Shaw does a 180 on protecting his people and officers and doing his duty to actively going out to kill them with not one attempt to turn them. I get Anotheny could be pushed in that direction but the only hint about his selfish personality is when he says he'll save seemingly fine people after he does his current job which is justifable and one story about him being a jerk and sleeping with many women. But in the end he's all gun ho on killing anyone in his way and abandoning everyone even his father for himself.

His father is even a bigger desparcher the whole time he seeks to help the main female lead and is sympathetic to her but without even talking to her once he is also willing to kill her without a second thought all for the money. I see how his dedication to Family can lead to that if given enough time and proper cercomstances I can seem his doing it. But no he doesn't say a word to his second in command and trys to kill her when he could have easily tempted her with a cut of the money for silance after all she has a daughter that she will need to provide for. But no. Kill her and curse her for daring to do her duty even when that's his thing as well.

One of the worst sins though is the final scene. Where they have escaped and heading to the nearest town she reveals that she had the money the whole time millions to help restart her family. The same money she got people killed over for trying to steal she stole.... And the book never addresses this disconnect where it's okay for her to take it but not the Shaw family. Leading to my low score.
