Publisher's Summary

The acidly funny first book starring the subversive sleuth in one of the most successful mystery series of all time. Fletch is an investigative reporter whose methods are a little unorthodox. Currently he's living on the beach.

He's taking more than a little flak from his editor. She doesn't appreciate his style. Or the expense account items he's racking up. Or his definition of the word "deadline". Or the divorce lawyers who keep showing up at the office. So when multimillionaire Alan Stanwyk offers Fletch the job of a lifetime, which could be worth a fortune, he's intrigued and decides to do a little investigation. What he discovers is that the proposition is anything but what it seems.

This was a really great movie too

This was a really funny interesting book. Definitely worth a read. Very enjoyable. Fletch is a great character. It actually made me laugh out loud a couple of times.

And there’s a movie too

I was debating whether or not to buy this audio book. I had already seen the movie with Chevy chase. In the end I figured I’d pick up the book as movies generally miss details.

I’m glad I did. The audiobook is great. Plus it opens the door for all the other books in the series.

Straightforward Mystery. Laugh-Out-Loud A**holery.

Investigative Reporter 'Irwin (I.M.) "Fletch" Fletcher' assumes false identities with jawdropping ease. He easily fakes legitimacy with fast talking, elaborate plausible character backgrounds, and easy lies. Add utter contempt for the people around him and some of the sharpest (read: cruelest) sarcasm & dark humor that I have ever read.. and we have a hilarious, fascinating character.
Author Gregory McDonald further develops the protagonist by making him a dogged, intuitive sleuth - working tirelessly to solve the mysteries with which he is presented (and intermittently recording his thinking as his investigation proceeds).

Blackstone Audio Inc. orchestrated a coup when they cast Dan John Miller to read the book, too. A couple of female character voices are fairly weak - but Miller's diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are absolutely spot-on.

Altogether, this 9/10-star Mystery is fairly two-dimensional.. but has an element of Comedy that makes it incredibly enjoyable. McDonald's writing skills aren't Pulitzer-worthy (scripting waaaay too fast-paced during interviews, for example), but it is good enough to prompt me to download further installments in the series.

1974 was darker in print

This is a grittier 1970's noir than the slapstick comedy that the movie might have readied you for. But the surprise of it made it more enjoyable.

Not for me

Did not enjoy the story. While I do really enjoy mystery novels, this did nothing for me. Story was flat not exciting. My first foray into Fletch series will be my last.
