About this listen
Top-notch suspense and "killer" comedy merge in this rollicking national best seller filled with funky characters, resounding dialogue, and inappropriately named "wise" guys. In the grand tradition of Elmore Leonard, Laurence Shames creates an outrageous heavyweight thriller that’s heavy on atmosphere and action. Joey Goldman is a low-level New York hustler. He’s taking a working vacation in South Florida and looking to score big with a time-share scam. His half brother Gino Delgatto is a man in need of a fall guy. When they meet in Key West, the term dysfunctional family takes on a new meaning. Will one of them succeed? Or will the Miami mob find an eye-popping way to dispose of them both?
Critically acclaimed narrator Richard Ferrone brings every character to life - from bad guys in shiny blue suits to Steve the naked landlord - with a crackling intensity you will love.

Ferrone makes a great story even greater!
Joey Goldman is the loveable loser illegitimate son of a major New York godfather, and since Pops and older brother, Gino, can’t be bothered to give him the time of day…he packs up his girlfriend, Sandra, and moves down to Key West. Joey has even less luck with the mobsters in Florida, so he goes legit; and then his brother gets in trouble with the Don of Miami and suddenly Joey is called upon to somehow save the day.
This book kicked off a 14-part series of being mobbed-up in Florida, and has an amazing cast of characters: including the not-so-retired Bert The Shirt and his annoying chihuahua, Don Giovanni, who become the Florida family Joey never had back home. The adventure is wild, the prose is wilder, and the ending is brilliantly done. And if you want a narrator to perfectly deliver the gritty underbelly of small-time Florida thugs, Richard Ferrone delivers a home run!
