About this listen

There's a nasty flu going round. An epidemic, they call it. The posters say to cover your mouth when you sneeze, and throw away the tissue. But such simple measures won't stop this flu. Because when you catch this flu, armed police come and lock you in your house to die alone. When you catch this flu, it kills you in days. And when you catch this flu, two hours after it's killed you, your eyelids snap open again....

Flu is a pacey, terrifying, frighteningly real zombie horror story.

I didn't expect much, but this book was waaay higher quality than I expected. This is a very character driven story. People may find it slow. it was everything I wanted from a zombie story

I was surprised

I really enjoyed the story but found myself rewinding quite a few times to figure out who was doing what, and what was going on. The narrator was very monotone which made the story hard to follow at times.

A excellent story bad narration

This Wayne Simmons ZA story isn't particularly original - I've seen all of these "Struggle to survive in a world suddenly gone mad" scenarios before - but he avoids many of the most well-worn tropes in Zombie Fiction (anarchic roving gangs; everyday people becoming new-found heroes + gathering survivors; LMOEs; hunting for loved ones; searching for a cure; etc). Additionally, Simmons's setting (Ireland during The Troubles) is intriguing and his characters are incredibly flawed & interesting - he populates his story with surviving hardluck Belfast lowlifes, IRA terrorists, crooked Royal Ulster Constabulary Police Officers, and selfish Garda soldiers. The book is imperfect but capably written and enjoyable.

As to presentation: Michael Kramer does Michael Kramer things. His Irish accent is pretty weak on this project, but he is still one of my top 5 professional audiobook readers. Tantor Audio Inc. didn't cast this project very well (Kramer's American accent sounds strange reading words like "boot" & "torch"), but I could listen to that man's baritone timbre & character interpretations for hours and hours with gratitude.

Altogether, 'Flu' merits 8 stars out of 10. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found it on the 'Plus' menu.. because it would rate a Credit. I won't be continuing with the series when it leaves the "included with your subscription" catalog, but you wouldn't be crazy to do so.

[Note: The description of "Rescue Camps" becoming overwhelmed by too many refugees and falling into chaos is pretty pessimistic but brilliant]

Very Good Entry In The Genre

Very good listen, the narrators voice was smooth like butter. The story line was very easy to follow not jumping around like some do. Free book.
