Throne of Glass meets Black Jewels in this twisted yet alluring dark fantasy tale.

It’s okay
It’s not bad but nothing amazing, the book kinda ends on a cliffhanger and I’m kinda surprised not a whole lot actually happened in the book.
Quinn is something dark and has lived in slavery for over 10 years between about 17 owners. She hasn’t come into her full potential/ powers yet.
A lord finds her and makes a contract with her for 5 years, he’s trying to become king and hopes her powers will make sure it happens. There’s lots of sexual tension between the two but nothing happens.
Her lord takes her to a secret place to test her potential powers and it almost kills them both.

Fantastic Read
I had a great time reading FORTUNE FAVORS THE CRUEL. It’s exciting, filled with drama and action, moves at a good clip, is immersive, and everything I could ask for in an escapism book.
Quinn is a former slave who finds herself in a bargain with a powerful nobleman named Lazarus who will train her to control her power if she aids him with his ambitions.
Quinn and Lazarus are both morally grey and that makes them quite compelling. She is tenacious and unwilling to be cowed or controlled. He is driven and finds his will tested every time Quinn challenges him. I really, truly liked these characters and the depth they both got. Their motivations were clear and that added to the believability of their actions.
The world-building is easy to follow and the action is plentiful. The side characters are a delight and there are lots of questions I want to be answered. I really enjoyed the plot and the connections the characters had. The prose is also very, very well crafted and makes this an immersive read.
This is a great dark fantasy book with strong, morally grey characters, perfect for anyone looking to scratch that itch. I highly recommend it and can’t wait to continue with the series!

Couldn’t make it past chapter 20. Waste of time.
Worst fantasy lit I’ve tried in a long time. Little to no character development meaning no investment in anyone or anything. Dialogue is ridiculous and quite dull. Outbursts from characters seem to make no sense and become tedious. Attraction is based on “just a sense” or unexplained “pull” - pretty much lazy and terrible writing.
Reader was fine.
