Angela's account of growing up under the DDR and experience under this system as well as the book's detail on her own country's political system give the background required to understand how Angela became:
- A long-term leader in one of Europe's largest nations
- A renowned and well-respected international diplomat
There are portions of the book which have been criticized as boring or monotonous, however this also gives us insight into Angela's structure, routine, and detail as to how decisions were weighed and made. Overall this book met my expectations of discovering what makes a strong, well-respected and fair democratic leader.

Merkel has a way of stating things in a way that isn’t boring, but to the point. She doesn’t spend a lot of time with regrets or what might have been. This is what happened and why I did it this way. I would have loved to see a bit more around her personal life, but she chose not to go this route. Definitely a recommended read.

I learned tons and tons about how Europe changed and grew post Wall, how the European world dealt with shared goals and calamities since 1989.
