About this listen

The propulsive, shockingly plausible sequel to New York Times best seller Daemon.

In one of the most buzzed-about debuts, Daniel Suarez introduced a terrifying vision of a new world order, controlled by the Daemon, an insidious computer program unleashed by a hi-tech wunderkind. Daemon captured the attention of the tech community, became a New York Times and Indie best seller, and left listeners hungry for more. Well, more is here, and it's even more gripping than its predecessor.

In the opening chapters of Freedom, the Daemon is firmly in control, using an expanded network of real-world, dispossessed darknet operatives to tear apart civilization and rebuild it anew. Soon civil war breaks out in the American Midwest, in a brutal wave of violence that becomes known as the Corn Rebellion. Former detective Pete Sebeck, now the Daemon's most powerful - though reluctant - operative, must lead a small band of enlightened humans toward a populist movement designed to protect the new world order. But the private armies of global business are preparing to crush the Daemon once and for all.

In a world of conflicted loyalties, rapidly diminishing human power, and the possibility that anyone can be a spy, what's at stake is nothing less than human freedom's last hope to survive the technology revolution.

Excellent Cyber Thriller

This was a great sequel to Daemon. I will be honest, I did prefer the first book but this was an excellent followup. Definitely recommended if you are looking to listen to a good thriller. The narrator did an excellent job, 4.25+ stars.

Quite the ride!

Freedom by Daniel Suarez is the second final book of a two-book series. They’re both excellent, but Freedom was an even better effort.

First, Suarez does a great job of mixing together several different genres. It’s a straight-up action thriller that has strong elements of espionage, military/war, apocalyptic/end-of-days, and sci-fi.

Second, his imagination combined with his grasp on all things to do with the internet and technology was impressive. It allows him to weave a believable story that seems ripped out of today’s headlines. That he wrote this story back in 2009 makes the effort all the more impressive.

Third, Suarez writes some best action scenes I’ve encountered in some time. He offers the right amount of everything: detail, speed, and violence. When the SHTF at various points in the novel, it’s visceral.

Overall, Freedom and Deamon are exciting and well-written novels that could be enjoyed by folks who are interested in several different genres. And Freedom has a very satisfying ending.

A quick word about the narrator – exceptional! He has a full range for male and female voices and he does accents very well. A great listening experience.

Absolutely astounding. Highly recommended.

The first chapter, for whatever reason, didn’t hook me. I put the book down and had to try it again later. Boy, am I glad I did. Suarez paints the picture of an amazing world nearly equal to the great fantasy worlds, complete with plenty of (technological) magic. A gripping story I couldn’t put down.

A Money Cyber Thriller

Awesome conclusion. Love the idea and everything about this book. The first was better but this one fits right in. Incredible performance by the narrator/s.

Good

2nd half of the daemon book. Would have been a nice epic if merged into one book.

Loved the forest book, not the second

The story on the first book was intriguing. the second book arrived with triple the complexity. it's way too complicated and over the top making it much less interesting than the first.
Still very well narrated though.
