About this listen
While the Grohl family had always been musical - the family sang together on long car trips, harmonizing to Motown and David Bowie - Virginia never expected her son to become a musician, let alone a rock star. But when she saw him perform in front of thousands of screaming fans for the first time, she knew that rock stardom was meant to be for her son. And as Virginia watched her son's star rise, she often wondered about the other mothers who raised sons and daughters who became rock stars. Were they as surprised as she was about their children's fame? Did they worry about their children's livelihood and well-being in an industry fraught with drugs and other dangers? Did they encourage their children's passions despite the odds against success or attempt to dissuade them from their grandiose dreams? Do they remind their kids to pack a warm coat when they go on tour?
Virginia decided to seek out other rock star mothers to ask these questions, and so began a two-year odyssey in which she interviewed such women as Verna Griffin, Dr. Dre's mother; Marianne Stipe, Michael Stipe of REM's mother; Janis Winehouse, Amy Winehouse's mother; Patsy Noah, Adam Levine's mother; Donna Haim, mother of the Haim sisters; and Hester Diamond, Mike D of The Beastie Boys' mother.
With exclusive family photographs and a foreword by Dave Grohl, From Cradle to Stage will appeal to mothers and rock fans everywhere.

Story
As lead singer and songwriter for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Anthony Kiedis has lived life on the razor's edge. Much has been written about him, but until now we've only had his songs as clues to his experience from the inside. In Scar Tissue, Kiedis proves himself to be as compelling a memoirist as he is a lyricist, giving us a searingly honest account of the life from which his music has evolved.

Such an interesting view!!!!!
I absolutely loved this book from the forward to the end conversation between Virginia and Dave. I loved hearing about all of the musicians and their mothers even ones I’ve never taken an interest in. Their stories were so very interesting and I loved hearing about each one of them. The short vignettes offer a glimpse into the childhood and early rockin days of Dave Grohl. The discussion between mom and son at the end was a fantastic bonus!

An intimate look inside an elite moms group
Loved it! Dave's forward and his conversation with his mom at the end are like perfect bookends to a shelf full of great stories about musicians from a lot of different genres. Virginia Ghrol does an excellent job narrating her story.

Musical History from a Mother's Perspective
Thank you Virginia Grohl! As a lifelong music fan, I have recently delved into the biography genre of many musicians. One of my favorites thus far was your son's book, The Storyteller. He is exactly that. A Storyteller. I think there's something missing in the title though, the word Gifted. You made that guy. Nothing short of amazing! And on behalf of fans everywhere, thank you for doing the right thing to help form one of today's musical genius'.
It was delightful to hear of your stories of being the Mother of Rockstar. The ups and the downs, but mostly of your involvement in Dave's journey. Well done, mama!
The entire book made me think hard about all of the musicians in the world and the families that support(ed) them, even if it is hard sometimes and does not always meet a happy ending. There is a whole lot more behind the music fans get to enjoy at the touch of a switch. The lives of musicians' families can be hard and fans need to share the love not only to the musicians themselves, but to their wonderful families.
Blessings and love!
