About this listen

"I believe there is another man inside every man, a stranger...." writes Wilfred Leland James in the early pages of the riveting confession that makes up "1922", the first in this pitch-black quartet of mesmerizing tales from Stephen King. For James, that stranger is awakened when his wife, Arlette, proposes selling off the family homestead and moving to Omaha, setting in motion a gruesome train of murder and madness.

In "Big Driver", a cozy-mystery writer named Tess encounters the stranger along a back road in Massachusetts when she takes a shortcut home after a book-club engagement. Violated and left for dead, Tess plots a revenge that will bring her face-to-face with another stranger: the one inside herself.

"Fair Extension", the shortest of these tales, is perhaps the nastiest and certainly the funniest. Making a deal with the devil not only saves Dave Streeter from a fatal cancer but provides rich recompense for a lifetime of resentment.

When her husband of more than 20 years is away on one of his business trips, Darcy Anderson looks for batteries in the garage. Her toe knocks up against a box under a worktable and she discovers the stranger inside her husband. It's a horrifying discovery, rendered with bristling intensity, and it definitively ends a good marriage.

Like Different Seasons and Four Past Midnight, which generated such enduring films as The Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me, Full Dark, No Stars proves Stephen King a master of the long story form.

What the critics say

"[T]hese tales show how a skilled storyteller with a good tale to tell can make unsettling fiction compulsively readable." ( Publishers Weekly)
"King has gone on record saying he believes that American readers should pay more attention to the virtues of short fiction... if anyone can get reluctant short-story and novella readers into the swing, he certainly can with this book." ( Booklist)

Happily Disturbing

Stephen King's character work continues to evolve and amaze as he crafts these incredible stories. I was enthralled and horrified. I recommend this audiobook to anyone who wants to lose themselves for a while and shine a light into very dark places.

Fantastic story

I love this story but the narration is awful and detracting. She sounds grating and falsetto so that almost ruined it for me. Meh.

Quality Stories - Perfect Performers

I really enjoyed the stories. It reminded me of Four Season for how much they came and got my emotions running while I listened. The performers where absolutely stunning. It really is a must have if you are a Stephen King fan

Mr King, if you read this, please... I really enjoy the forewords and afterwords when they are read by you, if you can :)

awesomely addictive!

Love it! Awesomely Addictive! Re listened to any parts that I may have missed by drifting off to sleep as I listen to these stories on a timer as I try to sleep....I really enjoyed it and it put a totally different spin on the whole dynamic and how each person views it.

Stories are great

Love this book and the stories but the woman narrator's voice doesn't sit well with me. Unfortunately

Oboyoboy!!

This is a book that should be read by those who are brave and open minded about 'story lines'...this book was almost too difficult to 'read'...still, I love Mr. King's books ...all of them..I have them all...this is one I've listened to a couple of times because I really liked the the three stories in this book and the narrators chosen were chosen well...its a great listen....if your of strong mind then give it a go....

Thought provoking and entertaining

The first story was more gruesome with detail than I normally like but a good solid story you will want to see through till the end. The other 3 stories all intrigued me.

believe the title

these are really interesting stories, but as another reviewer said, they are very dark at times and may be too much for some readers.

1922- pretty good, better than the movie and good ending.

Big driver- not sure what women will think of a man's take on being a female victim of sexual assault. that said, good story if somewhat implausible timeline and engaging until the end.

fair extension - short but great. an interesting take on an old idea.

a good marriage - a really great story idea based on an idea lots of people have wondered about; what if your spouse / partner had a horrible secret life that you found out about. great idea, execution and ending.

if you find the stories, or even the idea behind them too dark, I found it helpful to listen to the afterward. in this king explains the ideas behind them and why he felt it was important to explore them.

Definitely dark

Thoroughly enjoyed the stories. Definitely some dark topics.
Narration was terrible. The male voice wasn’t too bad, but the woman was truly awful.
