About this listen
Like many Germans, Berlin schoolboy Erwin Bartmann fell under the spell of the Zeitgeist cultivated by the Nazis. Convinced he was growing up in the best country in the world, he dreamt of joining the Leibstandarte, Hitler's elite Waffen SS unit. Tall, blond, blue-eyed, and just 17-years-old, Erwin fulfilled his dream on Mayday 1941, when he gave up his apprenticeship at the Glaser bakery in Memeler Strasse and walked into the Lichterfelde barracks in Berlin as a raw, volunteer recruit.
On arrival at the Eastern Front in late summer 1941, Erwin was assigned to a frontline communications squad and soon discovered that survival was a matter of luck - or the protection of a guardian angel. Good fortune finally deserted Erwin on 11 July 1943 when shrapnel sizzled through his lung during the epic Battle of Kursk-Prokhorovka. Following a period of recovery, and promotion to Unterscharführer, Erwin took up a post as machine-gun instructor with the Ausbildung und Ersatz Bataillon.
From the war on the southern sector of the Eastern Front to a bomb-shattered Berlin populated largely by old men and demoralized lonely women, this candid eyewitness account offers a unique and sometimes surprising perspective on the life of a young Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler volunteer.

An honest memoir
A Waffen SS soldier who volunteered and fought in Adolf Hitler’s elite unit. What was he thinking? Well he tells you pretty early on, and then tells you his wartime experience. There’s some good action and some adventure towards the end. I found it entertaining and exciting at times. The author does not burden the reader with any justifications or philosophical ideas. He just tells his story.

An enjoyable honest read
I enjoyed the story. the author doesn't shy away from discussing some of the more sordid actions of his country during the war, not very common in books by German vets.

Absolutely fascinating - honest - and compelling
Wow! What a read! This man tells his incredible journey in gruesome detail, and with brutal honesty. It’s practically time travel, stepping into his world, and his youth, and living through 1930-40’s Germany through his eyes. A unique perspective from the Second World War, combat on the eastern front, and chaos in the aftermath of Germany’s collapse.
Worth the read.

mixed feelings
it was a great book but frankly it is nearly impossible to feel any sense of pity or empathy for members of the SS in my mind. I understand he was raised in a time and place and circumstances which I can only imagine after 1918 but, he still swore allegiance unto death the most evil man to have ever lived and served a regime of equally evil puppets. Wermacht soldiers I have some ability to understand but not the SS. this book is a fascinating insight into the mind of Hitlers Germany .
