About this listen
In the realm of Alera, where people bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal - 15-year-old Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. But when his homeland erupts in chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Tavi's simple courage will turn the tides of war.

A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

Story
Twenty-eight florins a month is a huge price to pay for a man to stand between you and the Wild. Twenty-eight florins a month is nowhere near enough when a wyvern's jaws snap shut on your helmet in the hot stink of battle, and the beast starts to rip the head from your shoulders. But if standing and fighting is hard, leading a company of men - or worse, a company of mercenaries - against the smart, deadly creatures of the Wild is even harder. It takes all the advantages of birth, training, and the luck of the devil to do it.

The Beginning of a Wonderful Journey
Furies of Calderon was a great book with an interesting magic system. I love Jim Butcher's Dresden series and thought I'd give his fantasy a try. Since reading this, I have continued the series which I LOVE, however, this first book is a bit of a slog due to the numerous character perspectives all running parallel scenarios simultaneously. Isana is captured, then Tavi is captured, then Bernerd is captured. Isana is in pain, Tavi is in pain, then Amara is in pain. You don't get much relief from a storyline between characters. Despite this, the book is worth the slog, and the following books are incredible and Kate Redding's performance is masterful. Check it out! #Audible1

Worth the Read - Adventure/Fantasy
I read this series years ago but never finished it. So I'm listening to the audiobooks to refresh my memory before continuing the series.
I delved into these books at different stages in life, and I still enjoyed the story. Each character has an intriguing arc and we're on the journey to find out how their past, present, and future will tie together. So far, the characters are "in character" and their actions and development are well rounded and true, which makes them all fascinating and relatable. Every action taken by a singular person has a ripple effect that carries throughout the storyline and it's fun to look back and try to identify the "what ifs". The characters have been set in motion, and I'm excited to see them develop.

Awesome!
One of my all-time favorite fantasy tales. Extremely well performed.
Great characters, interesting and vivid settings, and a wonderfully gripping and twisty plot.

great book
fun book with a good mix of suspense and comedy. I didn't understand the connection of abilities to some furies. some were clear but others seemed random and some were never really explained. I look forward to learning more in the next books.

Reading was great
Reading was great, however, it was either my phone or how the reading was edited together where some parts seemed abrupt, like words had been skipped..

its worth the listen
it was good, but too formulaic of the genre; a boy that does not look like he will amount to much turns out to be the savior of the kingdom.
