About this listen

Sir Derek Jacobi reads a collection of tales from the master of ghost stories, M. R. James, whose stories have for many years inspired the BBC's A Ghost Story for Christmas TV adaptations. M. R. Atmospheric

These classic ghost stories hold up unbelievably well. They were written early in the 20th century (many pre-WWI), but live up to genre-defining status. These are "Jamesian" tales - a bucolic/pastoral setting, a tense build-up, and a malevolent ghost (look elsewhere for comforting forays into the afterlife). You can definitely read the influences in modern horror literature (King, particularly).

Sir Derek Jacobi reads brilliantly. The knighted actor's timbre, cadence, pacing.. and most of all tone.. are honestly *perfect* for the text. Audible Studios judiciously adds creepy music highlights at the end of each of the five stories in this compendium that underline the creepiness beautifully. I got actual chills (I usually don't).

I am grateful to Audible for including this 9.5/10 star collection in the 'Plus' catalogue. I likely wouldn't have downloaded it otherwise.. but having listened to it, I can highly recommend that you do so.

A little too outdated and not exactly scary.

if you're looking for ghost stories with a bit of a scare this is definitely not the book for you. if you enjoy old literature, then perhaps. Younger readers will got lost in the lingo, especially if your not from the UK. Couldn't finish the book but got about half way.

Spooky and strange

I wouldn't say it's scary, just strange sometimes. The narration was great and that is what brought the stories to life.
