Publisher's Summary

The fae abandoned this world to us. And the ones with power rule.

Gold. Gold floors, gold walls, gold furniture, gold clothes. In Highbell, in the castle built into the frozen mountains, everything is made of gold. Even me.

King Midas rescued me. Dug me out of the slums and placed me on a pedestal. I'm called his precious. His favored. I'm the woman he Gold-Touched to show everyone that I belong to him. To show how powerful he is. He gave me protection, and I gave him my heart. And even though I don't leave the confines of the palace, I'm safe.

Until war comes to the kingdom and a deal is struck.

Suddenly, my trust is broken. My love is challenged, and I realize that everything I thought I knew about Midas might be wrong. Because these bars I'm kept in, no matter how gilded, are still just a cage.

But the monsters on the other side might make me wish I'd never left.

From bestselling author Raven Kennedy comes the first book in the BookTok hit Plated Prisoner series, perfect for fans of Sarah J Maas and Jennifer L Armentrout. The myth of King Midas is reimagined in this compelling adult fantasy series that is as addictive as it is unexpected. With romance, intrigue, and danger, the gilded world of Orea will grip you from the very first word. Intended for mature listeners.

Newly recorded in duet-style narration by Lilly Drake and Anthony Palmini.

Really really good listen

I am so unsure why this book has such low ratings on goodreads - it was an amazing read. Eloquently written, with a perfect amount of inner dialogue, excellent pacing and interesting prose. Definitely check the trigger warnings though. The narration is some of the best I’ve heard too! I love that they used a male voice for the male characters. The voices are very distinguishable and I love the lilt in Lilly’s voice as she describes everything. The male voice is such a deep baritone too, when it needs to be, it is perfect! If you have been on the fence with this book, I’d give it a try.

Enchantingly Dark and Captivating!

I just finished “Gild” from the Plated Prisoner series, and I am absolutely enthralled. Raven Kennedy masterfully weaves a dark, intricate tale that grips you from the first page. The protagonist, Auren, is both vulnerable and resilient, navigating a world filled with danger and intrigue. The world-building is lush and immersive, with a haunting beauty that makes it hard to put the book down. The emotional depth and complex relationships kept me hooked, and I can’t wait to dive into the next book. “Gild” is a must-read for fantasy lovers who crave a blend of darkness, romance, and magic. Highly recommend!

beware the triggers

this book was slow. not much happened, but the powers of the kings intrigued me. i am interested in learning about the rest of the worldbuilding. do I still feel compelled to listen to the next one? yes. I'm not sure what the plot was. the narrators did a great job. not sure who the love interest is. the only contender I felt worthy is very obviously no longer in play.

Way Better than I expected

Honestly I avoided this book for a while because Booktok was feral about it but now I see why.
Though it was slow to start I was quickly riveted.
the VAs did an awesome job of pulling me in as well- I'm familiar with Palmini's work through his role in ACOTAR and he managed to impress me all over again, and Drake's voice is clear and nuanced.
Can't wait for the release of Book 2!

Mediocre

I couldn’t tell if it’s just the writing or the monotone narration that forced me to leave this review but the entire experience was one note.

Updated Review

After my first review, I decided to give this book another go. The narration is wonderful, but I really struggled with the story. It felt like glorified Stockholm Syndrome, with S.A. This type of story is not for everyone, but I am interested to see how the subsequent books play out. I love reading about female empowerment and it seems that may be direction this is headed in. For that reason, I decided to change my review.

nearly didn't finish it

I made it through but it wasn't very exciting and the FMC was frustratingly weak and simple minded. I found her frustrating to listen to. the narrators did a good job.
