About this listen
Poor Ginny Bloggs! She had inherited a fortune, a magnificent country estate, and her benefactor's disgruntled relatives, a quartet of querulous schemers horrified to find themselves at the mercy of a low, common girl, a total stranger - the coal merchant's daughter!
The handsome Lord Gerald de Fremney had pledged to keep the more unruly relatives in line. He thought he understood thoroughly modern women. Her reluctant guardians thought they understood society. Such was Ginny Bloggs - as delicate as a china doll, as bold as brass. She understood them all, and now she was going to teach them all what it meant to be a lady!
In this whirlwind series, Marion Chesney brings us spirited, independent women who are at once bewitching, beguiling, and determined to make their mark on the world, be it within their social circle or extending beyond. With their arms wide open, these women are absolutely original and unforgettable, as are the tales in which they are featured.

Edwardian romance
The narrator is a bit annoying, I found I had to speed it up to stop the staccato pauses.
I didn’t really warm to the characters. I couldn’t figure out what Ginny saw in the romantic protagonist. I thought all the main characters unappealing.
Although the tepid exploration into the class structure had its moments of interest.
Overall it was OK, if it bit meh. 😑

Beaton's Worst Effort
Readers who are fans of Beaton's mystery series will likely be stunned by the trite nature of her Regency romances. This book features the most unlikeable "hero" I have ever come across. His behavior is repulsive right to the bitter end. While the plucky Ginny had potential in the beginning, the ludicrous plot and her desire to marry anybody makes her fall flat. Add to this the whiny nasal tones of the male characters by the narrator and you have a most unpleasant listening experience.
