Publisher's Summary

Lisa Smith was a bright young lawyer at a prestigious law firm in New York City when alcoholism and drug addiction took over her life. What was once a way she escaped her insecurity and negativity as a teenager became a means of coping with the anxiety and stress of an impossible workload.

Girl Walks Out of a Bar explores Smith's formative years, her decade of alcohol and drug abuse, divorce, and her road to recovery. In this darkly comic and wrenchingly honest story, Smith describes how her circumstances conspired with her predisposition to depression and self-medication in an environment ripe for addiction to flourish. When her close-knit group of high-achieving friends celebrate the end of their grueling workdays with alcohol-fueled nights at the city's clubs and summer weekends partying at the beach, the feel-good times can spiral wildly out of control.

Girl Walks Out of a Bar is a candid portrait of alcoholism through the lens of gritty New York realism. Beneath the façade of success lies the reality of addiction.

Real and Raw

This book really made me think about my own experiences. I found myself looking forward to my commutes (which is when I listen to audio books) so I could continue listening to Lisa's story.

Loved this one!

I loved this honest memoir of one woman's journey into sobriety. I too have recently been to detox, and like the author, did not do rehab after, My life didn't have a dramatic breakdown either, but it was still time to make a change. This writing was so relatable, and one of my fav's in the genre.

Part of my recovery

Another gem tale of addiction and recovery I can relate to. Lisa’s story is salacious and just what I needed when meetings become a struggle.

The writing and voice were superb.

Raw and Honest

What an incredibly moving memoir of a woman struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. I felt like I was right there in the room with her and I have learnt so much of the struggles of a person who is fighting addiction. So powerful and engaging. One of the best memoirs I’ve read. Very well written. Should be required reading for medical professionals and high school students

good story, didn't care for Hilary

honestly, the narrator's voice was awful. I got through the book but it sounded like my Google home was talking to me in a robotic voice. I had to rewind chunks because her tone caused me to zone out. I enjoyed Lisa's story tho.

Raw and Accurate ; an addict revealed passionately

Relatable, emotional, and suffocating at times. This book took me into her thoughts and feelings. A reminder of my own triumphs.

Relatable

A fantastic read for anyone in recovery or thinking that “maybe” they have a problem with alcohol or/and drugs. It really takes the scariness away from taking the leap to change your life to the better.

Such a real story

Great narrator with lots of vocal changes. It matches the story well. The story was real - easy to connect to the characters.

Gritty Memoir

A very honest colourful and gritty Memoir.
It's is so honest and powerful I thought at first it was a novel. Very good description on the descent into addiction of a very intelligent woman.. I also enjoyed that it was not connected to a business as so many sober memoirs are now
