About this listen
The official novelization of the summer blockbuster Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the latest film in the MonsterVerseTM franchise, starring Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, with Ken Watanabe and Ziyi Zhang.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters follows the heroic efforts of the cryptozoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super species, thought to be mere myths, rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
©2019 Greg Keyes (P)2019 Blackstone Audio, Inc.True, he largely adheres to the screenplay (evidently recapitulating dialogue and action scenes moment-by-moment) - but also adds excerpts from worldwide myths & legends about monsters at the head of each chapter. In addition, he adds character background elements (imbuing relatability) and hypothetical debates in the scientific literature should such creatures exist (lending a much-needed illusion of authenticity to the story). The result is a deeper experience than cinema-goers could expect from a deliberately visual-heavy Gaiju fanboy spectacle.
This is a high quality novelization.
Straight-up brilliant narration from Michael Braun adds to my enthusiasm for this audiobook. Blackstone Audio Inc did a marvellous job casting this project and lend Braun exemplary technical support (the sound quality is unsurpassed). Mr. Braun reads too slowly (listening at 1.20X yields the most natural experience) - but his diction, timbre, cadence, tone, and voice-acting are all spot-on.
Don't expect to be blown away by the story (it's packed with annoying "Hollywood" clichés), but if you can't access a screen, this 9/10 star interpretation of an admittedly silly film is easily worth a download. If you can get it as a 'Plus' selection.. all the better.
