In a world about to be destroyed, star-crossed lovers Lissane and Erun will do whatever it takes to escape the destiny in store for them - and the families sworn to keep them apart.

When a vengeful sorcerer unleashes a Fire Demon to destroy his rivals he sets off a chain of events that will eventually destroy Gol, a war-ravaged continent at the other side of the world. Unaware that time is running out Gol's scheming barons overthrow their king and strive to seize control, unleashing a bloody civil war. Baron's daughter Lissane, and commoner Erun find themselves caught in the web of murder, treachery, and sword and sorcery threatening to destroy their existence.

The lovers plan to flee Gol before its foretold ruin. But Baron Barola already has plans for his daughter and sends his brutal sons to deal with Erun.

Gol mingles, mystery, myths, and legends with gritty action and snappy dialogue, woven to an epic tapestry of dark fantasy. The novel introduces the listener to the Legends of Ansu, a spell-binding new fantasy series that will appeal to fans of Game of Thrones. If you like tough action featuring gritty characters set to a vivid fantasy backdrop of war, treachery, and vengeance, then you are going to love this new tale by JW Webb.

This J.W. Webb offering introduces readers to his imaginative "Ansu" reality - a medieval-level-of-development world with feudal human fiefdoms, a rich sweeping history, low-magic dynamics, and constant war. This installment introduces readers to the legendary continent of "Gol" (Ansu's version of Atlantis) - focusing on it's semi-mythical history as we follow treacherous kingdoms forming/breaking alliances while a young peasant named 'Erun' trains in combat and quests to rescue his secret love: princess 'Lisanne' (betrothed to a horrible foreign prince). The expected 'Romeo & Juliet'-like story turns out to be surprisingly mature. Webb introduces Black Magic, demonic forces, violent mercenary-army battle, heirs assassinating each other to gain power, near-explicit sexual action, and liberal F-bombs to his fairy tale. The book is a 1930s Disney plot.. for Adults.

As to presentation: reader Andrew McDermott is an undeniably professional narrator - but his strong Irish brogue doesn't quite fit the text and he exhibits an annoying persistent lilting cadence (especially at the end of sentences) that makes it sound like he's explaining the story rather than relating it. James William Pugh Publishing (yes, the audiobook is self-produced) should have cast the project better.

Altogether, 'Gol' rates 5 stars out of 10. It was a reasonable distraction if downloaded off of the 'Plus' menu.. but not worth a Credit should they ask for one.

[Note: later entries in the series introduce non-humans, shape-changing lycanthropes, violent corsair/pirates, northern Barbarians, and far-east Samurai-for-hire (Ronin) to Webb's world. Don't expect that in this one]

Really good story yet again. I love following the tales and lore of the Legend of Ansu series now! Expertly read by the narrator too. If you like fantasy adventures, this whole series can't be missed, and this book in particular tells an important part of the overall.

Great book
