About this listen
After losing her job and learning she might also lose her house because of a bad investment, Jess, a fiercely independent and hilariously wry BC grandma, resorts to growing pot in her basement to make ends meet. She then has to juggle her public life as a grandmother and member of the town’s senior women’s group - The Company of Crones - with her secret life as a pot grower.
The unusual characters she meets along the way include Swan, the enigmatic young woman who introduces her to the grower’s world, and Marcus, the socially awkward “gardener” who shows her the tricks of the trade. Both of her new young friends are more than they appear, and Jess’ adventures in pot growing break down barriers in both her old and new circles. The delightful outcome of an almost legitimate business leaves Jess and her associates flushed with success.

"[Jennifer Craig] has crafted an entertaining story set in British Columbia, where she hails from, that is reminiscent of the cozy mysteries of Lilian Jackson Braun. With the same engaging prose and mastery of the allure of everyday life, Craig weaves a tale featuring quirky characters and a lovable heroine." (Booklist)

A Real Treat
Such a sweet story of a granny falling on hard times, but also finding a way out. I'd love to taste her Brownies.

Very funny!
Wasn't quite sure what to expect, but this was a very worthwhile listen. It was light, funny and fast paced, a nice antidote to more lumbering books. The narration is wonderful.

Endearing story, good characters
Jess loses her job when the restaurant she works at as a waitress burns down. Being in her 60's, in a small city in the interior of B.C. she finds it impossible to find a job. She turns to growing pot.
The characters are endearing, it certainly has the same vibe as the movie cocoon. I enjoyed the characters and I thought the narrator, Kyra Harper, has a perfect voice to bring the main character to life. I am sure somebody who actually grows pot could poke holes in it, but as an outsider, there was just enough detail about growing pot to make it ring true. The ending was a bit too fairytail but didn't detract from the story.
It is interesting that this book came out in 2017, but it must have been written much earlier. Part of the plot stems around this being an illegal activity. But by 2017 people already knew that pot was about to become legal in Canada, and today, everything she did would be legal.

Exactly what I needed
This book was the breath of fresh air I needed after a long run of sad and heavy books I’ve been reading. It was fun and had me laughing out loud through the whole thing. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for just a good happy, cute story.

Short, Fun Listen
A lighthearted story about finding your way and the friends you meet along the road.
It was an easy listen, quick-paced and funny.
I preferred the narration at 1.1x speed and she did a good job.
This was just what I needed between longer books with heavier topics/moods.

A fun read
I live in Alberta and have some idea of what Nelson is like. THe author clearly knows her setting and it was fun to hear her descriptions of this unique town. The story flowed nicely and showed the characters evolving in a positive way—as we all hope to do. The reader’s voice was perfect and her laid back narration was very enjoyable. I would listen to other books based on Kyra Harper being the reader.
