About this listen

When Gone with the Wind appeared in 1936, it became on overnight sensation. Nothing like it in American literature had ever been seen. It went on to win the Pulitzer Prize and become one of the most celebrated films of all time. It has sold more than 30 million copies worldwide and been translated into 27 languages.

Gone with the Wind is both an historical novel and an examination of the bewildering changes that swept Georgia in the 1860s. The novel begins just before the Civil War opens and ends in 1871. During those intervening years Mitchell’s novel illustrates the struggles of the Georgians who lived through the Civil War and Reconstruction eras.

Here are the most famous characters in American literature: handsome, controversial Rhett Butler; spoiled, flirtatious Scarlett O'Hara; aristocratic gentleman Ashley Wilkes; and saintly Melanie Hamilton. As the lives of these and other equally fascinating characters play out against the chaotic background of war and Reconstruction, Gone with the Wind scales heights of human drama that have rarely been reached.

What the critics say

“The narrative is excruciatingly vivid. For days after reading Gone with the Wind, the reader lives the experiences of the characters Margaret Mitchell has given the world.” (London Times)

“No reader can come away without a sense of the tragedy that overcame the planting families in 1865 and without a better understanding of the background of present-day Southern life.” (The New York Times)

Incredible insight into humanity.

I have read people saying not to read this book due to racist content. I say, don't let others think for you. This is a masterpiece.

Timeless story, incredible performance

Gone With the Wind will stay in my mind for a long time. Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler are some of the best-written flawed characters I've ever met. When listening to their tale, I felt that their triumphs and tragedies were equally deserved, and yet, even though they often made choices I didn't want them too, I couldn't help but want them to succeed. Thanks to the excellent writing, I found myself able to actually see the world from their point of view, even though I didn't agree with them.

The narrator, Charlton Griffin, absolutely deserves praise for his work in this recording. the rich and varied tones of his voice made it easy to live in the world of the book as I was listening.

One of the Oldies but it's a Classic.

Outstanding performance!
Rarely do I leave reviews on books, however, I will leave a review of one, if not “the” finest book that I ever enjoyed. I've read it 5 times in my 70- something theater years. Each time I garnered a deeper meaning, as I read this book in my youth, then, again, in my 20’s. I enjoyed it yet again in my late 30’s early 40’s. I've a copy of the movie with the big named stars, the first time in theater, sitting in the balcony, with my Cousin and my dear Aunt, the other times on my own machine. Now in my 70’s I'm enjoying Scarlett and Rhett’s adventures and Melanie and Charles and the ever-long-suffering Ashley Wilkes

Amazing!

Obviously this is a classic we all love BUT the narrator on this audible is amazing. He does different voices for each character and for the whole, almost 50hrs of this book he does not break character. Absolutely the best! I’m going to look for more books he narrated he is that good. ❤️
