About this listen

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist. Put New York Times best-selling authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett together...and all Hell breaks loose.©1990 Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (P)2009 HarperCollins Publishers Fantasy Fiction Literature & Fiction Comedy Funny Good and Evil Paranormal Witty

What the critics say

"Pratchett (of Discworld fame) and Gaiman (of Sandman fame) may seem an unlikely combination, but the topic (Armageddon) of this fast-paced novel is old hat to both. Pratchett's wackiness collaborates with Gaiman's morbid humor; the result is a humanist delight to be savored and reread again and again." (Amazon.com review)

Really great

I loved it !! I think I really loved the narration as well . The book it self is a bit confusing at times maybe just because of a different writing style. But it was beautiful and very funny just a great book.

Hilarious perfection

What a coming together of minds this book is! There are few books that make me actually laugh out loud and Good Omens is definitely one of them. There is so much going on, but each little diversion is hilarious and rich in its own detail. I cannot recommend it enough. If you enjoy tongue in cheek humour, funny dialogue and a lots of series of confusing events, this one is for you. The TV show is quite good too, and faithful to the text.

The physical book itself has a lot of textual clues to help you keep track of the meandering story (different fonts, clearly marked out footnotes etc).
I bought the audiobook when I felt like a re-read and i expected it to fall short because of how overwhelming the narrative is. But this performance is BRILLIANT. The narrator does a spectacular job of bringing the myriad of different accents and characters to life. The only drawback is that the book is not split into smaller chapters, because of the structure of the story. Each chapter is long and covers multiple different storylines. That is fine in the physical book but a tiny bit confusing in the audiobook.

A delight from start to finish.

I watched the show first, but it didn't subtract from my enjoyment of the book. One of my "go to" audiobooks for when I'm having an annoying day and need a bit of a "pick me up".

Listened to it after watching the TV series

I own a paper copy of this book and read it in advance of watching the TV series recently (to this review) released. So I have to say that this review might best be taken with a grain of salt.

This is a fun story. Consuming it in three different ways in the course of a week, each time enjoying the work, catching different details, perhaps warns of how much I truly enjoyed it. I originally read the book years ago (when it was first released I think, if not then shortly after) and then a couple of times since. Terry Pratchett remains one of my favourite authors and Neil Gaiman isn't much further down the list.

We have the story woven from two authors, each bringing their voice to different aspects of the whole. In the book there isn't as often a jarring shift when we have the Tadpole village sections (which others have attributed to Terry Pratchett - I cannot say if their assessment is true or not) to the Angel/Demon team-up trying to save the world story aspects. The TV series wasn't quite as smooth as the book, trimming the story a touch to shape it in what is half the duration of the audiobook.

So we have more time with each of the minor characters, almost all getting at least three appearances in the book. We learn about the other four horsemen of the apocalypse and other details of humorous intent.

I enjoy the story a great deal. Having the ability to listen to it while I work on other things was great and I know I will return to this story at least once a year. The reading here is great and I had no issues at all with it. Overall, if you watched the TV show - the book is better. This is a great way to get the book.

Brilliant ... but ....

Sadly, the trials of our heroes in heaven and hell was only part of the show. However, the inclusion of "The Other Four Horsemen" was fun ... if not predictable!

Outstanding Narration

A perfect collaboration, with brilliant narration. Warning: don’t listen when tired, his lilting voice will knock you out.
