Publisher's Summary

While Dad is away on a business trip, 9-year-old Sam stays at Gams’ house. Over the next two weeks, she and Gams share quality time and grow closer together. Gams’ home is both fascinating and scary. The old house is filled with a lifetime’s worth of treasures.

Sam looks up to her Gams, a great cook and an expert gardener, but is saddened as she sees her grandmother struggling to do things that once came so easily. She notices that the big house is getting to be too much for Gams to manage; the stairs are getting harder and harder to climb. When Dad returns, Sam knows, she must find the courage to share the struggles she’s seen with him what she has witnessed.

Mad? Furious! is how Sam feels when she hears how her father speaks to his mother about the challenges Gams is facing. He tells her that he needs to “place” her. This sounds all wrong to Sam. Gams is not and never will be an object to be “placed”!

Our words have the power to open up or rapidly shut down conversations. To a senior destabilized by a loss of autonomy, a few simple words can make all the difference. Let’s speak from the heart when it comes to conversations around aging.

A wonderful visit to Grandma's

A wonderful short story of a grand daughter visiting her grand mother's house. During her stay their respective realities are contrasted. Many pleasant activities and good discussions are shared. Back home with her parents she talks about the different things they did. Many wonderful things were shared yet although young she notice difficulties Grandma had doing this or that.

Everybody know we will ask this question at some point in our lives; When is it time to find a new residence that will be best suited for the changing needs of Grandma? The plot is a primer to talk about import subjects that everyone will face with loved ones; ageing, diminishing abilities, reduced energies, ect.

A good book for a book club as it written in a touching way that will certainly help many readers & families answer the question: what is Grandma's next best step?

This book is a gift for every family and all generations

The vivid and caring language in this book is conveyed wonderfully well by the warm voice of the reader. The gentle pace suits the tender conversations and allows listeners to imagine the homey and welcoming scenes, to feel compassion for the characters, and to ponder the messages of the story: our words matter; people are to be cherished and not treated like objects; senior citizens and children have valid opinions. This book is a gift for every family, and all generations, and will encourage listeners (and readers) to be brave and hold important conversations with love. Thank you, Marie-Claude Giguère!
