About this listen

Audie Award, Classic, 2009

Considered by many to be Charles Dickens's finest novel, Great Expectations traces the growth of the book's narrator, the orphan Philip Pirrip (Pip), from a boy of shallow dreams to a man with depth of character.

From its famous dramatic opening on the bleak Kentish marshes, the story abounds with some of Dickens's most memorable characters. Among them are the kindly blacksmith Joe Gargery, the mysterious convict Abel Magwitch, the eccentric Miss Havisham and her beautiful ward Estella, Pip's good-hearted roommate Herbert Pocket, and the pompous Pumblechook.

As Pip unravels the truth behind his own "great expectations" in his quest to become a gentleman, the mysteries of the past and the convolutions of fate through a series of thrilling adventures serve to steer him toward maturity and his most important discovery of all - the truth about himself.

Excellent Dickens

I’ve read other reviews on this. Actually Simon Vance is one of my favourite readers. Also I’d say the pace of the reading matches the language and time period. Reading Dickens isn’t intended to be like reading a comic book. At any rate I felt Mr. Vance did an excellent job as always. If you enjoy classics and like Dickens I would recommend this….

No

I downloaded this 20 hours (note audiobook length) before the in-depth test in AP English Lit--which included 40 multiple choice and a 6 page essay--as a way to ensure I would read the whole thing. I did, and I hated every second of it. I wholeheartedly do not care if this novel is considered a "true classic", I would have gladly burned it to goddamn ashes had my copy not been school property. I despised it so much that I am writing this review 2 years later; I have not needed another audiobook until now (fuck you, university), but my rage against this pretentious piece of flaming shit is burning brighter than ever. Frankly, I don't remember much about the actual voice actor, but I DO remember yelling to everyone in my vicinity about how slow he talked. I am positive that if I were to ever hear his voice again, I would immediately retch uncontrollably. Overall, I do not recommend, unless you're intentionally looking for a reason to leave this godforsaken earth.
