Shape-shifters, battle mages, and blood magic-wielding bad guys, or as Orson Reid calls it - Tuesday. Luckily for Orson, the rumors are true; he is the Ollphiest, the monster that even monsters fear.

Now, as the newest member of the Paragon Society, Orson is eyeballs-deep in a crash course on battle magic. He spends his days training with Lucy, who attempts to slice, dice, and set him on fire. Seriously.

So, when the society directs them to check out a possible rogue magic user in Northern California, Orson is more than happy for the break.

A total of 350 miles north of Los Angeles, a college sophomore, in a desperate attempt at love, has unwittingly unleashed chaos, placing Orson and Lucy on a collision course with mayhem.

This David Delaney story - Book Two in the 'Paragon Society Series' - continues the adventures of 'Orson Reid' - a gamer-nerd fused to a revenge-motivated monstrous werebear alter-ego creature named "The Ollphiest" and working with other magical beings within a sketchy secret Magic Society hiding in plain sight throughout human history. The book has strong echoes of 'Harry Potter', 'Dr. Faustus', 'Artemis Fowl', 'Twilight', and 'Men In Black' all rolled into an Urban Fantasy story involving terrifying true-to-life Blood Magic and Demonic invasion of our reality.
Delaney's plotting is surprisingly R-rated (gore + sex + death abounds).. but his approach is markedly lighthearted (including immature laugh-out-loud pop-culture references like crazy). The incongruity is straight-up fascinating. It really shouldn't work, but somehow does.

As to presentation: Reader Matt Godfrey displays a couple of cartoonish character voices, but his narration overall is well "above-average" too. Tantor Audio Inc. cast this project brilliantly.

Altogether, I rate 'Gypsy Witch' 8 stars out of 10. It was a thoroughly enjoyable distraction for free - even worth a Credit if they ask for one - but almost nonsensical if you haven't read 'Orson' (Book One). If you decide to give the book a try, read that one first.. and be aware that this book ends with an aggressive cliffhanger.

[Note: That every female within spitting distance (including Battle Mage partner/mentor 'Lucy') wants to jump Orson's endlessly "hot" bones is the most disappointingly masturbatory aspect to the character - revealing him as an awkward geek's wet dream ("I wish *I* could be both superpowered & that desirable..")🙄]

Fun Book. Zero Standalone Merit.
