About this listen
“A rollicking tale.” —The Washington Post *“Propulsive.” —Associated Press * “Wild, smart, energetic.” —Los Angeles Times * “Brilliant and effervescent.” —NPR
From the #1 bestselling author of The Glass Castle, the instant New York Times bestseller a “rip-roaring, action-packed” (The New York Times) novel about an indomitable young woman in prohibition-era Virginia.
Sallie Kincaid is the daughter of the biggest man in a small town, the charismatic Duke Kincaid. Born at the turn of the 20th century into a life of comfort and privilege, Sallie remembers little about her mother who died in a violent argument with the Duke. By the time she is just eight years old, the Duke has remarried and had a son, Eddie. While Sallie is her father’s daughter, sharp-witted and resourceful, Eddie is his mother’s son, timid and cerebral. When Sallie tries to teach young Eddie to be more like their father, her daredevil coaching leads to an accident, and Sallie is cast out.
Nine years later, she returns, determined to reclaim her place in the family. That’s a lot more complicated than Sallie expected, and she enters a world of conflict and lawlessness. Sallie confronts the secrets and scandals that hide in the shadows of the Big House, navigates the factions in the family and town, and finally comes into her own as a bold, sometimes reckless bootlegger.
“You’ll fall in love with Sallie on the very first page and keep rooting for her all the way through to the last” (Good Housekeeping) in this thrilling read that “goes down easy…like the forbidden whisky that defines the life of Sallie Kincaid” (Associated Press).

Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

A very pleasant surprise!
I have never read a book by this author before and, frankly, had never heard of her... I took a chance on this book and it paid off as I truly enjoyed every moment of it! I also sort of cringed when I heard the author was narrating the book. I must say, however ,that she did an absolutely brilliant job that would give any actor a run for their money! I feel like this book was a credit well spent as it gave me many hours of enjoyment and escape.

Did not disappoint!
I loved this book, as do I, all her others, but this was the 1st one I’ve ever listened to & I loved the fact it was narrated by her as well.
I thought Sally’s character was brilliant, especially when I learned at the end, that it was partially based on real life characters/events.
I found myself loving & not loving some characters and drawn to some more than others.
I doubt any fan will be disappointed!

Hang the Moon
I struggled to finish Hang the Moon. Ms. Wall's voice became annoying about half way through the book. The story jumped around a lot, almost as if the writer was searching for ways to make it longer and more interesting. I enjoyed The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses, but this one is not her best writing.

I have loved all of Jeanette’s books and I loved this one too. I wanted it to keep going, to see what happens to Sally next, watch her get older, and hope there can be a sequel to this !! I got completely immersed in the story, it was all so vividly written, like her other books. Jeanette does a great narration too. Really enjoyed it!
