About this listen
Audie Award, Paranormal, 2012
Jake Sullivan is a licensed private eye with a seriously hardboiled attitude. He also possesses raw magical talent and the ability to make objects in his vicinity light as a feather or as heavy as depleted uranium, all with a magical thought. It's no wonder the G-men turn to Jake when they need someone to go after a suspected killer who has been knocking off banks in a magic-enhanced crime spree.
Problems arise when Jake discovers the bad girl behind the robberies is an old friend, and he happens to know her magic is just as powerful as his. And the Feds have plunged Jake into a secret battle between powerful cartels of magic-users - a cartel whose ruthless leaders have decided that Jake is far too dangerous to live.

Story
When marine private Oliver Chadwick Gardenier is killed in the marine barrack bombing in Beirut, somebody who might be Saint Peter gives him a choice: Go to heaven, which, while nice, might be a little boring, or return to earth. The Boss has a mission for him, and he's to look for a sign. He's a marine: He'll choose the mission. Unfortunately, the sign he's to look for is "57". Which, given the food services contract in Bethesda Hospital, creates some difficulty. Eventually it appears that God's will is for Chad to join a group called Monster Hunters International.

For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

They hunt us. They bomb our worlds for target practice. A star cluster in the constellation of Orion rotates once every 1,000 years. Those who rule there have an ancient tradition: When each cycle ends, they train their fleets by spilling the blood of lesser beings. The enemy fleets are coming again. In response, the Rebel Worlds gather their starships to face the terrifying threat, and this time humanity is asked to stand with them. The last time they considered Earth, Vikings in longboats were raiding English coastlines. Today, we're less primitive. Today, we're a target.

Odessa Hardwicke's life is derailed when she's forced to turn her gun on her partner, Walt Leppo, a decorated FBI agent who turns suddenly, inexplicably violent while apprehending a rampaging murderer. The shooting, justified by self-defense, shakes the young FBI agent to her core. Devastated, Odessa is placed on desk leave pending a full investigation. But what most troubles Odessa isn't the tragedy itself - it's the shadowy presence she thought she saw fleeing the deceased agent's body after his death.

Happy to find new series
At first, I thought I would not like the book. It took me a second try to get into it. The book begins from a few different characters perspectives which was confusing at first but then they begin to connect and it all starts to make sense. Very entertaining and exciting book.

There are only a couple of "slow" chapters in this book, the rest is just one development after another. Very well written, very interesting characters, many plot twists. The whole idea of "magic" is very well presented.

A Dangerous & Magical Time
I adore the Grimnoir series. It's an alternate timeline where some humans have magical abilities and wars ended differently than it did here. At the top of each chapter is an excerpt from famous historical times that are altered thanks to magic. The plot keeps moving at a fast clip, and you never know which historic figure you'll meet next or what next problem will strike the main characters. #Audible1

So much fun
What a great story! Adventure, guns, magic, and such realistic details. I love the bits and pieces from actual history blended with the alternate magical history. This would make a great movie. I’m a fan of Monster Hunter International and Correia pulls off a similar but decidedly different world in Hard Magic. Great characters, great voices, it’s easy to fall into believing the entire story. And the view of magic opens up endless possibilities. Recommended.

the mix of magic and 1930's adventure serials works quite well.
