Publisher's Summary

In this characteristically turbocharged new book, celebrated Rolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi provides an insider's guide to the variety of ways today's mainstream media tells us lies. Part tirade, part confessional, it reveals that what most people think of as "the news" is, in fact, a twisted wing of the entertainment business.

In the internet age, the press have mastered the art of monetizing anger, paranoia, and distrust. Taibbi, who has spent much of his career covering elections in which this kind of manipulative activity is most egregious, provides a rich taxonomic survey of American political journalism's dirty tricks.

Hate Inc. will be an invaluable antidote to the hidden poisons dished up by those we rely on to tell us what is happening in the world.

Smart and terrifying

A depressing narrative of how biased and maniacal the mainstream media has become. Matt has his biases and left leaning view, but all in all a fairly good analysis of the present backed with facts, stories and sources.

A well deserved beat down of modern media

Like many, I can't stand what the media has become today. Set to divide and anger the population, rather than inform it, it's a travesty of journalism that is making us stupider and allowing elites to exert more control over our life.

I picked up this book to hear a more in depth discussion of this issue, so that I could have more ammunition to feed my arguments when debating people who don't see this. Matt Taibbi delivers nothing less than a Mortal Kombat style fatality move on the news industry. He does not hold back from dropping names and going after some of the worst personalities directly for their negative influences. While he spent a lot of time on right-wing propaganda outlets like Fox News, he does go after left-leaning outlets as well and more interestingly, goes further back, showing the historical roots of this issue and how it's been around much longer than we think.

Of course, Taibbi has his own strong biases as a writer and while I don't think he'd deny them if they were pointed out, he ignores the impact that hardcore social idealogues are having on modern discourse or the impacts of things like cancel culture, which is very much alive and well. That's a disservice to the discussion, though made up for by him copping to his own participation in this kind of news culture before he knew better.

If you think the media is rotten, this will reinforce that view. But it also cites a lot of examples and historical information that can better inform you on where this came from and how it ended up here. I highly recommend.

A fair account about why everyone is so divided

Matt has a fairly strong left bias but he is overall fair to both sides. He does a good job explaining the Trump voter and what makes them tick.

Clarity

Fantastic listen. It stitched together my patch work understanding of this whole fiasco. There were alot of themes that people will already know, but its the connecting of all those dots in a easy to digest manner that gives this book such value. Thank you Matt!

a reporter with a head on his shoulders

hard to follow sometimes because of so many references to US politics, but the message should resonate about the corporate media. nothing wrong with reading the stories, just do it with your eyes wide open and expect you'd need to do more digging to get the real truth

Spot on big picture thinking

I’m a fan of Taibbi and his writing.
Reasonable and certainly a take a step back and look style in my view.
He and Katie Halper do a solid job on Useful Idiots.
Keep telling it like it is.

Let writers read their own books!

Great book, but I really wish Taibbi would have narrated it himself.

Fass did fine, but Taibbi has a strong voice - and that would've come through more had he used his own.

Past & future meet head on in this one.

We are meant to learn from the past. This book offers the lessons, the lies and the layout for what is happening. How the roadwork is prepared for a convoy of trucks of untruth. It's thought provoking, disturbing and honest.
