About this listen
In his most ambitious work yet, Shermer sets out to discover what drives humans' belief in life after death, focusing on recent scientific attempts to achieve immortality by radical life extentionists, extropians, transhumanists, cryonicists, and mind uploaders, along with utopians who have attempted to create heaven on earth.
For millennia, religions have concocted numerous manifestations of heaven and the afterlife, the place where souls go after the death of the physical body. Religious leaders have toiled to make sense of this place that a surprising 74 percent of Americans believe exists but from which no one has ever returned to report what it is really like.
Heavens on Earth concludes with an uplifting paean to purpose and progress and what we can do in the here and now, whether or not there is a hereafter.

A mortal's point of view
I loved this book. It's written from a scientific perspective, but is not judgmental of alternative points of view. It explores, discusses both scientific evidence and spiritual beliefs with magnanimity and openness, and a touch of healthy skepticism. I also loved that Dr. Shermer -a well-known scientist, writer and skeptic- did not hesitate to express his own thoughts and feelings on the subject, in a respectful, almost humble way. It's both a substantial and personal book.
I warmly recommend it if you're interested in our beliefs in the afterlife, our quests for immortality (both religious and secular) and our dreams of a paradise on Earth... at any cost and by any means necessary. I enjoyed that author read his own book; whatever you may loose in listening experience you regain in a greater sense of connection to the ideas and thoughts expressed he expresses. David Smalley reads most of the book's quotes, making it a "dual narration", something I found interesting and entertaining. A great experience overall.
