About this listen

Emmy-nominated Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad, The Mandalorian) and Eric Dane (The Last Ship, Grey’s Anatomy) play two warring commanders in this military science fiction novel written by Nebula and Dragon Award finalists Richard Fox and Jonathan Brazee.

A war with no end. A vendetta that will destroy two commanders.

The war between the Alliance and the Hegemony has spanned countless stars and shed untold blood on a hundred worlds. For two commanders, Alliance Captain Alcazar and Major Richter of the Hegemony, the war has spiraled into a personal feud.

Both lead fierce marines and mechanized soldiers into battle against the other on the green hell planet, Ayutthaya, and each new fallen warrior only deepens the bitterness and hatred between the two.

But as the conflict rages, the two warriors discover they have more in common than they dare to admit, and their own codes of honor may be what can bring the bloodshed to an end...if they don’t kill each other first.

Military veterans and authors Fox and Brazee bring their wartime experiences and years as officers in the United States military in this grueling, head-to-head action driven story.

What the critics say

"A tour de force of edge-of-your-seat combat. Brazee and Fox put the reader in the middle of a sci-fi war that only actual combat veterans could write. Not only is the action some of the best out there, but they capture the still, quiet moments of conflict that readers deserve to experience. Hell’s Horizon is the book fans of military sci-fi have been waiting for. Don’t miss it!” (Dave Chesson, editor in chief, TopSciFiBooks.com)

"As real as combat is and can get without having to be there. Brazee and Fox have crafted the perfect blend of military science-fiction and hyper-reality. You can smell the gunpowder of old mixed with the energy from weapons yet to be." (Craig Martelle, Dragon Finalist for Best Military Science Fiction Novel, 2018)

"Top notch action sci-fi.” (JN Chaney, best-selling author of Renegade Star and Ruins of the Galaxy)

"This is not merely a science fiction about war. This is true military science-fiction at it's most authentic, grittiest, unsentimental best.” (Chuck Gannon)

Some audio issues

I came here for Richard Fox and Giancarlo Esposito. The writing is just the kind of gritty mil-scifi I've come tonexpect from Fox, and Esposito's performance has moments of brilliance, though sometimes the cadence of his narration is a bit halting. That's a problem shared by Dane, too, though, so maybe it's more to do with direction than the narrators themselves.

What does stand out, however, is a persistent problem with the audio levels. Often, the narrators' volume will trail off toward the end of sentences, becoming almost inaudible unless you crank thw volume up, which you dare not do because they literally shout much of the combat dialogue.
