Publisher's Summary
Gabe thought he had covered all the angles, but it’s tough to plan a contingency for accidentally trapping an evil god in your brain.
Gabriel Delling might call himself a professional con artist, but when walking superstitions start trying to bite his face off, his charm is shockingly unhelpful. It turns out living nightmares almost never appreciate a good joke. Together with a succubus who insists on constantly saving his life, Gabe desperately tries to survive a new reality that suddenly features demons, legends, and a giant locust named Dale - all of whom pretty much hate his guts.
And when an ancient horror comes hunting for the spirit locked in his head, Gabe finds himself faced with the excruciating choice between death...or becoming some kind of freaking hero.
Hero Forged is the first book in the new series, Ethereal Earth, a modern fantasy adventure that challenges the natures of myth, humanity, and what it means to be the good guy.

just needed to get this out there for my sake
I am going to say up front that I have not finished the book I just need a place to vent, and I will most likely give a different review at the end. So first the audio is not clean, constant hum. Second and the reason I am writing this, I got to a kiss scene with soul stuff and I hated it honestly I did not vibe with it kinda made me sick but at least it was done for a purpose right... wrong seconds after the reason they did it was completely undone. And I feel like they are trying to set up a relationship with the succupus with I hate just as much Honestly I don’t know if I want to continue, I would probably stop now and return it but it was a gift credit.

Well Done
Really well done. Performance was very good too. The author could probably do that on the side if he wanted, but I hope he just concentrates on getting the next one out. Looking forward to it !

Nice work Josh!
Great story, thoroughly enjoyed it, start to finish!
One thing that let it down a tiny bit for me was the Harry Potter attitude of Gabe... I just get a bit tired of the hero not wanting what he/she has... It's about time someone wrote a story about an arrogant hero. Looking forward to the next installment.
Cheers,
PS. I didn't pirate it :) I'll still spread the word though.

Haven't seen it's like since I first read Dresden!
I generally consume audiobooks far too quickly to leave a review on them. Going through maybe one every two days.
This story forced me to ignore my usual policy. The characters and their motivations are clear and understandable, and the narrator - who is also the author - does an excellent job of injecting personality into them.
Josh Erikson has an excellent vocal range, and the cadence and inflection he provided to the story made me feel as though it would be a crime to experience Hero Forged in anything but audiobook format.
There is a genuine spark of greatness here that I haven't felt for many years sifting through Urban Fantasy stories that increasingly feel like dime store novels.
Perhaps greatest of all is the slow changes the main character is forced to undergo throughout the story. The fact that he is conman and not a combatant is oft repeated and easily recognized in his problem solving process - and I love him to bits for it.
If you have a credit, or even if you don't - get. this. book.

Pleasantly surprised
I was tremendously hesitant when I saw that the author was the narrator. As a long time audiobook listener, I can say with certainty that the skills required to write a good book are not even remotely related to the skills required to narrate said book well.
I'm happy to say that the author is somehow quite skilled in both areas. Honestly, it's a bit unfair.
For a pilot, the story is fantastic. I feel like it was maybe a touch disjointed in areas and could use a bit more exposition here and there. That's largely personal taste though.
Overall, I'm very happy and will definitely continue with this series.
