About this listen

“This is totally, brilliantly original.”—Stephen King

“HEX is creepy and gripping and original, sure to be one of the top horror novels of 2016.”—George R.R. Martin

The English language debut of the bestselling Dutch novel, Hex, from Thomas Olde Heuvelt—a Hugo and World Fantasy award nominated talent to watch

Whoever is born here, is doomed to stay 'til death. Whoever settles, never leaves.

Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

The elders of Black Spring have virtually quarantined the town by using high-tech surveillance to prevent their curse from spreading. Frustrated with being kept in lockdown, the town's teenagers decide to break their strict regulations and go viral with the haunting. But, in so doing, they send the town spiraling into dark, medieval practices of the distant past.

This chilling audiobook heralds the arrival of an exciting new voice in mainstream horror and dark fantasy.

Good Story, Poor Narrator

I enjoyed the story but the narrator was brutal to listen to. Nearly quit a few times due to that.

Original, Unnerving and Crushing

The unholy lovechild of "Cabin in the Woods, "Pet Semetary," and your favorite witch story. Loved it start to finish.

What a great audiobook

If you like witches you’ll like this book. I won’t ruin anything but it’s a fun ride. Enjoy! From start to finish it’s solid.

ending was..?

was an ok book interesting characters, plot and over all story but it could of been darker or Scarier since I didn't find it scary at all but overall entertaining, one issue was the narrator would ... well it sounded like he was swallowing saliva over some parts and was extremely destracting and took me right out of the story, and he would do it all the time!!

Definitely wasn’t quite was I expected

Enjoyed it, though it wasn’t what I expected. Super unnerving story but if you’re looking for a spooky supernatural witch story this isn’t quite that.

Spooky, but uneven

The first half of this book seems like a comedy. It's so ridiculous, it's hard to imagine how creepy it will become. But sure enough, it does become creepy. There's a bit of "torture porn" but in the end, the horror is definitely grounded in human choices. Like if 1980s Stephen King wrote an episode of the X-Files.

If sexualized violence bothers you, or harm to kids or pets, maybe take a pass.

dark story for the dark days ahead

story about paranoia misogyny and hysteria in the face of accepting responsibility for past and present generational sins. w a nice helping of surveillance state trappings and what modern day responses to the truly unexplainable might look like.
the narrator's voice is among my favorites...like a combo of richard jenkins and william burroughs

Great Story, Great Ending. Move over S. King

Well crafted story with believable characters and motivations. Not so much a horror as a character drama/suspense. Very satisfying ending supported by interesting beginning and middle sections as well.

Intriguing!

This book had me right from the start. Creepy, original and modern! I felt like I was actually in their world, which is a true testament to Thomas’s wonderful writing.

Should we fear the witch or our neighbors?

A unique reimagining of the persecution of women/witches, the town and people who perpetuate their suffering, and the harsh reality that humans are scarier than any supernatural being or force could evet be. Definitely worth reading/listening to. The modern setting makes it all the more unsettling, you find yourself believing that the people, the town, and the witch could all really exist somewhere out there in a small town like Black Rock.
