Publisher's Summary

FEATURING AN EXCLUSIVE INTRODUCTION READ BY IAN RANKIN.

The 2nd Inspector Rebus novel from 'arguably Scotland's finest living writer' (The Times)

A junkie lies dead in an Edinburgh squat, spreadeagled, cross-like on the floor, between two burned-down candles, a five-pointed star daubed on the wall above.

Just another dead addict - until John Rebus begins to chip away at the indifference, treachery, deceit and sleaze that lurks behind the facade of the Edinburgh familiar to tourists. Only Rebus seems to care about a death which looks more like a murder every day, about a seductive danger he can almost taste, appealing to the darkest corners of his mind.

Great narration!

The setting and how it is described creates an atmosphere that is suited to crime fiction

I wish I had noticed that this is the abridged version before I bought it. The story seems disjointed, with very little character development, but I assume that is the result of condensing the novel. I usually enjoy Ian Rankin books, but this was an exception.

I also disliked the narrator. He has a plummy English accent which doesn't suit the story or setting at all. I have listened to many Ian Rankin books on Audible and much prefer James Macpherson as a narrator.
