About this listen
A celebration of the unsung heroes behind the game, including first-hand stories from moms of the NHL’s biggest stars
Hockey Moms laces together the stories of NHL hockey moms like Kelly McDavid and Ema Matthews with those of mothers who never expected their children to set foot on the ice. With insight, warmth, honesty and humour, more than thirty hockey moms share their own journeys as they figure out how to juggle trips to the rink with raising a family, building their own backyard rinks, finding ways to pay for new gear and dealing with the sometimes-heartbreaking setbacks faced along the way.
We learn first-hand, through personal examples, that there are different pathways that lead our children where they want to go. Often, it’s mothers who carry the emotional burden of helping kids navigate their path.
Hockey Moms features untold stories of the highs and the lows, the challenges and the triumphs, from the women who are the heart of the game. A perfect gift for the more than 600,000 hockey moms in Canada.

Story
Hockey culture: it’s a commonly used phrase inside the game, glorifying sacrifice, toughness, loyalty, and a sense of identity. Justin Davis viewed this culture as something he was lucky enough to experience. After all, he’d won a Memorial Cup after leading the tournament in scoring, and he’d been drafted by the Washington Capitals. “In my mind,” he says, “I was the normal one.” Unfortunately, after stepping outside the game, he began to recognize the racism, sexual abuse and bullying that was so deeply ingrained in the sport.

Story
Food critic Tempèsta Luddington has always felt like the odd person out in her family, ever since she lost her beloved mother at the tender age of thirteen. When her workaholic father passes fifteen years later, Tempèsta is not surprised that the majority of the considerable family money will pass to her dutiful younger brother, Wal. Still, she is left a modest remembrance from her mother, and for the first time Tempèsta has a world of choices before her.

Moses and Troy Horne here. Your mental-toughness guides! We know exactly how you feel. If you are reading this, you probably have a young athlete who struggles with in-game stress and maybe even sports performance anxiety. That is why this version was mostly written by Moses. As of the time of the writing of this book, Moses Horne is a 15-year-old elite athlete who can talk directly about the triumphs and struggles of working toward being mentally tough. This is the only book that I know of with input from an actual young athlete.

You too may be a hockey mom
This story reveals the journey a wide variety of hockey experiences the mom and her son/ or daughter took as the youngster played the game. Mothers of NHL stars. Mothers of Olympic women players. Mothers who kids did not go beyond the house/minor league. Mothers of black players. Mothers of indigenous players. And mothers of players with developmental issues. The stories have similarities with each other’s and with your own hockey mom experiences. Easy to listen to with Emma Love as narrator.

Loved the Stories
As a hockey mom, I enjoyed hearing from other hockey moms. That we all go through the same emotions, the same struggles. Each story relatable and hits close to home. Well read by narrator and we’ll written by author
