About this listen

Cursed. Broken. Possibly Insane.

Nyx was born Hollow. An empty vessel in a world of spirits. Normally, that was a death sentence, yet somehow he survived. He's always been stubborn like that.

He's also always been a bit crazy. Which is why, in another life, he did something reckless. He sent himself a message—his memories. Threw them into the Flow from which all spirits return.

Besides, Nyx believed in asking hard questions. Like, was reincarnation real? Would this half-ass plan actually work? And if it did, could his life really get any worse?

Turns out…it could.

What to expect:

A different sort of reincarnation story—one that isn't so easy. A crazy protagonist. Slow burn to OP power progression. Loot-based skill modification system. Infused spirit items. Crafting. Bromance. Couple's therapy. Murder Babies. Oh, and an interdimensional death wagon. Honestly, reincarnation never looked so crazy.

The narration of this book is amazing

I didn't really have any expectations when it Came to this book. The cover art looked interesting, so I thought I'd give it a try and boy, was I surprised. Can't wait for book 2.

The narration so painful and I couldn’t make it past chapter 3.

Prior to Hollow, I had purchased every audiobook from Travis Bagwell, so when I saw Hollow on pre-order I bought it without bothering to listen to the preview. Huge mistake!

I take no joy in sharing that this is the single worst narration of any audiobook that I have listened to - I currently have listened to over 100 titles which amounts to nearly 4 months of listening time (according to my Audible stats).

I am sure Noah Ward put his all into this, and I wish I could overlook his flawed narration, unfortunately it is intolerable. His tone is completely off, he enunciates all the wrong beats, he is reading at a pace that appears as though he cannot wait to be done, basically there is no gravitas to his delivery. It’s like he is channeling an over caffeinated version of Shawn Hayes character Jack from Will and Grace, which is fine for an irreverent sitcom, but an awful, awful, awful choice for a fantasy novel. Frankly, it makes about as much sense as Nicholas Cage’s Gumby-esque tone and delivery in “Peggy Sue Got Married”.

I tried to change the playback speed to .95 -.85 hoping that would help - it did not. I thought it would eventually grow on me, nope. I tried every audio setting to see if anything would make an improvement…. Thwarted again. Ultimately I threw in the towel and wrote this audiobook (and series) off (and any future books narrated by Noah Ward).

Is the story good… truthfully I have no idea, as I couldn’t get past the narration. Perhaps giving it a 1 is unfair, but not being able to even listen to the book that’s the highest it warranted. If you are able to get through all 22 hours I am envious. I want to like this book as I very much enjoyed every book in the Awaken Online series, and had high hopes for this new series.

Again, I take no pleasure in sharing what is about as negative a review as I have ever offered, however my experience with this audiobook is something I wish I could forget.

You may love it, and if you do I would very much like to read your review. In closing, don’t take my word for it, just listen to the preview and if you can take it for 22 hours, buy away. For myself, I could not make it through the first hour. Massive disappointment
