Publisher's Summary

Something strange is happening at the Orsk furniture superstore in Cleveland. Every morning, employees arrive to find broken Kjerring wardrobes, shattered Brooka glassware, and vandalized Liripip sofa beds—clearly someone, or something, is up to no good. To unravel the mystery, five young employees volunteer for a long dusk-till-dawn shift and encounter horrors that defy imagination. Along the way, author Grady Hendrix infuses sly social commentary on the nature of work in the new 21st-century economy.

A traditional haunted house story in a contemporary setting, and full of current fears, Horrorstör delivers a high-concept premise in a unique style.

It was ok

I wanted this to be so much better than it was. The narration is flat and overly sarcastic which seems to take away from the horror. The idea of this is great, the execution not so much. Mainly enjoyed the book but it felt like a one of those 90’s horror films with fun effects, cool gory action scenes, decent cheeky humour but a flimsy back story.

Narration killed the story for me.

The premise and concept was interesting and I was excited to listen to it but Tai Sammons narration killed the story for me. She didn't have enough variation between characters. I have listen to books when the narrator keeps one voice through the whole book but her voice was so monotone it was, well I hate to say it boring. I didnt even finish it because I thought it was wasting my time which is sad. Maybe Ill read it instead. The other issue is the characters didnt hook me right away. None of them seemed very interesting so add that to a narrator I wasnt enjoying and it killed the book for me.

A Confusing Genre

interesting concept, after the first few chapters I assumed the author was going for comedy horror, but the middle section is straight up creepy/scary with no jokes. However, it was hard to commit to it as a horror book with the lighthearted reading at the opening if each chapter.
I'm going to give this author another try, because I like thier imagination. This one might have been easier to read than listen too.

Not phenomenal but hilarious.

Now overall the writing isn't perfect, the characters are heavily flawed, but I feel like it all ties together to make a perfect B rated horror movie vibe. The reality is this is a ridiculous comedy, and if you take it seriously you will be severely disappointed. Go into this looking for some laughs, and along the way enjoy the strange reality the author has created and I am sure you will enjoy it immensely. In between chapters there is hilarious furniture "ads" that really tied it all together, so at least listen to the audiobook for that.

A solid listen but a bit of slog at parts.

I didn't find the story particularly original in any way. The performance was reasonable but the voices really blended together. Somewhat cliched. I did like some of the humour in the book. I would say wait for a sale and not spend to much on this. It is a fun yarn, especially if you have worked in a big box store.

Meh

It was a fun ride, and short one. But i think this book would be better as a short film. I think what killed it the most was the narration unfortunately. Always the same tone and manner of speaking, barely any changes in the characters, and very very nasally. Not the best choice of narrator for a horror, she took all the scary out of it with how she spoke evenly with no emotion. Not to mention, if it says "she whispered", could you at least try and whisper the line??
On a better note, the horror aspects were fun, and reminded me a lot of Event Horizon. It's an alright book, and left me kinda meh in the end. I don't know what I wanted, but I wanted more. Still cool

Weirdest book I've read

This one really surprised me. I had no idea what to expect and it took a while for the story to get going, but the second half was really enjoyable for me. It was a good mix of ridiculous and creepy! I especially thought the beginning of chapters listing "Ikea" furniture was a creative touch. Overall, this was an enjoyable listen!

Superstore meets Stephen King

Interesting and creepy ideas with a classic horror story arc. Made me visualize the series superstore teamed up with Stephen King to create an enjoyable tale of horror.
