About this listen

Lisa Jackson is a New York Times best-selling author of suspenseful, erotic thrillers. In Hot Blooded, she transports listeners into the heart of New Orleans, where a deluded murderer is on a holy quest of vengeance. Dr. Samantha Leeds hosts her own late-night radio talk-show on WSLJ. One day she receives a menacing phone call at her home, while miles away, a prostitute is strangled to death. Seemingly unrelated, nobody connects the two events until more murders occur under similar circumstances. Dr. Sam soon realizes that someone from her past is stalking towards her, armed with a rosary and a deep-seeded hatred. Sam must rely on her wits, and a friendship with her mysterious new neighbor, Ty Wheeler, if she wants to escape the killer's wrath. Filled with sensational suspense, Hot Blooded is a sizzling departure from the usual romance novel. Alyssa Bresnahan's steamy narration takes listeners deep into the murky Bayou swamps and the terrifying secrets within.©2001 Susan Lisa Jackson (P)2002 Recorded Books,LLC Contemporary Contemporary Romance Romance Romantic Suspense Suspense Exciting

Perfect Narration

I loved this audiobook. The narration was second to none and the script jumped from the page. The character development, arch of the story and realistic crime details…well done.

Edge of your seat suspense!

A great murder mystery that grabbed my interest in the first chapter! I couldn’t stop listening and the narrator was excellent as well.

Uncomfortably Graphic At Times - But Great

Lisa Jackson offers a creditable Crime-Thriller about a psychopath serial killer stalking a radio call-in show therapist in New Orleans ('Dr. Samantha Leeds').
The plot is "out-of-the-headlines" plausible, loaded with interesting twists & turns, and delivered with capable - if imperfect - vocabulary & prose.
True, Jackson sometimes has difficulty balancing the "procedural" aspects of the investigation & building sexual tension/steamy romance (between *impossibly* sexy/good-looking people, btw)..
..aaaand she describes the murders from the victim's POV, for some reason (a woman struggling for air & praying for her child as the killer strangles her while raping her is not something the reader needs to hear - those scenes are more disturbing than elucidating).. but I enjoyed the book overall.

As to presentation: Reader Alyssa Bresnahan is impressively understated. On the one hand, avoiding Louisiana accents voids the setting (this story could take place *anywhere*) - but the risk of attempting a bad Southern accent is significant (I know I couldn't pull one off). Bresnahan could have RUINED the book entirely. Bravo for the judicious decision.
She reads a little bit too slowly (setting playback speed at 1.10X restores a more natural rate), but her diction, timbre, cadence, and tone are all praiseworthy.
In toto, this Recorded Books Inc. listening product is "commendable".

Altogether, 'Hot Blooded' wastes the potentially fascinating setting and I strongly suspect that the books in this "series" will be standalones - connected tenuously by the inclusion of recurring poorly-explored NOPD Detectives 'Rick Bentz' and 'Reuben Montoya' - but this 7.5/10-star audiobook is good enough to prompt me to give 'Cold Blooded' a listen, too.

Best yet!

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. A great who dunnit read from start to finish. Performances excellent.
Especially pleased, with the fact that there were minimal extraordinary steamy scenes complete with vulgar language.
Highly recommend!

Ok

Just ok. For how long it was I had higher expectations of a compelling story line and character development, but we skimmed the surface of both. There was also a lot of repetition of phrases which I didn’t enjoy (ie “if she could just find a weapon…anything!….if she could just find something to use as a weapon…anything!”). The performance was good. But overall just ok!
