About this listen
After spending an unknown number of days caged, chained, and tortured by men wearing hoods in the darkness of a root cellar who insist he robbed a bank and killed several women, 25-year-old Ben Hawthorne is rescued by four men. But who are these men, and why were they looking for him - the son of Eli and Cora Hawthorne, born on a ranch outside of Nacogdoches, Texas, orphaned at 10 when his parents were killed by Comanches, and then taken by the Comanches who gave him his Indian name, Newcomer?
When he learns that his “rescuers” are in fact bounty hunters who believe he is the son of a rancher named Locklin, he doesn’t understand. Matters become even more puzzling when he is taken to the home of Locklin and the big-time rancher recognizes him as his missing son of five years, Seth. Things continue to confuse Ben when he is shown a picture of Seth and it is like looking in a mirror. Hawthorne knows who he is, but everyone he meets believes he is Seth, including Seth’s sister and Caitlan Black, the spitfire who was Seth’s childhood friend, who is ready to go to war with Arch Locklin over access to water.

Good Gritty Western
Good old fashioned western with lots of twists and surprises. Character development is very good.

Entertaining Western Adventure
Do Not download this S.I. Soper offering looking for "literature" or accurate Historical Fiction. What you will get is a passable shoot-'em-up loaded with Old West clichés: the fearless, morally-incorruptible fistfightin' gunfightin' good guy ('Ben Hawthorne'.. or maybe 'Seth Locklin'); belligerent "Injuns"; bounty hunters chasing an easy score; ambitious cattle barons; and the obligatory pretty rancher's daughter ('Kat Black') in need of rescuing.
That said, Soper is pretty good at it. The dialogue is believable, the characters - while 2-dimensional - are at least consistent, motivations are true-to-life, and the action is a little too hurried but reasonably well-scripted.
Fortunately, the narration from Traber Burns is likewise creditable. He exhibits professional diction, timbre, and cadence.. reads at a nice pace.. and largely eschews Hollywood Texas twangs while demonstrating commendable voice-acting. His tone is a little too matter-of-fact (too often lacking emotiveness), but this is one of the better performances I have heard from Mr. Burns.
Taken altogether, 'Hot Metal' merits a solid 8.5 stars out of 10. I am grateful to Audible for offering it as a 'Plus' selection - because it would actually rate a Credit for Western fans looking for a diverting romp.

Good listen
Unlike another review that didn’t recommend the book since it wasn’t historically factual. I enjoyed the story very much. Found the book well written & wasn’t expecting history as it’s fiction & wasn’t looking for no -fiction in the listen!
