Publisher's Summary

This is the personal side of battle, where emotion, courage, and strength are stretched to the limits.

In one of the most compelling combat narratives ever written, Staff Sergeant David Bellavia, an Army infantry platoon leader in Iraq, gives a teeth-rattling, first-hand account of 11 straight days of heavy house-to-house fighting during the climactic second battle of Fallujah. His actions in the firefight, which included killing five insurgents in hand-to-hand combat, earned Bellavia the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, and New York State's highest military honor, the Conspicuous Service Cross. He has been nominated for the Medal of Honor and for the Army's second-highest combat medal, the Distinguished Service Cross.

What the critics say

"[W]ill satisfy readers who like their testosterone undiluted...a precise, hour-by-hour account of the fighting, featuring repeated heroic feats and brave sacrifice from Americans." ( Publishers Weekly)

great book

I started this audiobook last year and never finished it. I found that the author was ridiculous and I found it hard to believe the way he was behaving. Then I made myself finish it and I'm glad I did. I realized that I didn't understand the man initially. As events unfold and you hear about the insane combat his unit endured, it all makes sense. This is an excellent book.

Great story and Geat narration

I loved this book, it tells the story of the fight these men had and doesn't pull punches on the the mistakes that were made along the way. Ray Porter does an amazing job narrating the story.

Hard hitting story of 1st Fallujah.

I started this story quite randomly not knowing it was the story of a Medal Of Honor winner. I don’t think he had been awarded the decoration before it was published. The end was perfect and quite poignant.

Loved it, absolutely riveting.

I served in Afghanistan and few books have captured the soldiers culture as well as this one. I was glued to it and felt very sad when I’d finished it. I highly recommend it.

One of the best war books I’ve seen, I’m currently on my 3rd time listening to the book, recommend it for everyone.
