About this listen

Uncover the evidence-based science to slowing the effects of aging, from the New York Times bestselling author of the How Not to Die series

When Dr. Michael Greger, founder of NutritionFacts.org, dove into the top peer-reviewed anti-aging medical research, he realized that diet could regulate every one of the most promising strategies for combating the effects of aging. We don’t need Big Pharma to keep us feeling young—we already have the tools. In How Not to Age, the internationally renowned physician and nutritionist breaks down the science of aging and chronic illness and explains how to help avoid the diseases most commonly encountered in our journeys through life.

Physicians have long treated aging as a malady, but getting older does not have to mean getting sicker. There are eleven pathways for aging in our bodies’ cells and we can disrupt each of them. Processes like autophagy, the upcycling of unusable junk, can be boosted with spermidine, a compound found in tempeh, mushrooms, and wheat germ. Senescent “zombie” cells that spew inflammation and are linked to many age-related diseases may be cleared in part with quercetin-rich foods like onions, apples, and kale. And we can combat effects of aging without breaking the bank. Why spend a small fortune on vitamin C and nicotinamide facial serums when you can make your own for up to 2,000 times cheaper?

Inspired by the dietary and lifestyle patterns of centenarians and residents of “blue zone” regions where people live the longest, Dr. Greger presents simple, accessible, and evidence-based methods to preserve the body functions that keep you feeling youthful, both physically and mentally. Brimming with expertise and actionable takeaways, How Not to Age lays out practical strategies for achieving ultimate longevity.

Informative, entertaining, must read

This should be mandatory reading as an instructions manual for the human body.

It's not about a fad diet, it's about a lifestyle that will make life better.

And it's geeky enough for my taste too, I love the humor of Dr Greger.

Great Information but Terrible Deilvery

The information presented is great and worth learning; it is clear that a great deal of research went into the writing of this book. Outside of the near-constant references to outside material (you will literally have to buy his other books and/or go online to other sources to learn more about so many mentioned topics), the narration was definitely sub-par. On the plus side, however, the included PDF has direct links to many of those videos and sources so that's great.

I found the narration by the author to be horribly distracting as he pauses at the wrong points, inflects at the wrong points and appears to have no training whatsoever in how to read/present to an audience. I love the book and the information presented but the delivery is an absolute fail. With that being said, I will be picking up the printed copy of the book so I can reference it without the narration and I will also be looking into getting his other titles since I was impressed with the amount of knowledge he fit into this single book. The book is definitely worth listening to again so I'm trying...

a comprehensive manual on staying young!

What an oddysee of a nearly 28hr listen, with Dr.Greger narrating this epic round up of studies in a way only he can. A lot of this book is content that was already familiar to me from his other books (though always a welcome reminder, nothing gets you pumped on eating more plants and beans than this guy), however the portion on micro RNA was especially exciting - food is literally coding yourself. So cool.

Very informative, interesting & fun to read / listen to

I like that its fact based which you can verify. I highly recommend the book if you want to stay young. The instructions and recommendations are simple and no expensive stuff to buy. Although sometimes you cannot get it from other parts of the world. I also like that it was narrated by the author itself which adds more fun and personal flavor. Bottom line it make sense and if followed i believe will make major changes in your health and longevity

Laundry list of non conclusions

He obviously only supports a vegan diet and the data is not organized well . Very disappointing

Says meat is bad

the author claims meat to be bad for you. the lat st science claims that isn't entirely true. just like everything else you need organic. Meat should be grass fed. Wild meat is super healthy for you based on the latest science. It seems like the author may be a part of PETA or doesn't believe in eating animal products.
