Publisher's Summary

We all make poor financial decisions sometimes. No one knows this better than J.D. Roth.

In 2004, deep in financial debt, Roth resolved to turn things around. Reading every money book he could, and putting that knowledge into practice, he dug himself out of debt and built enough wealth to retire early. He is now, at the age of 51, financially independent - and on a mission to help others achieve financial freedom, too. No gimmicks, no games. Just proven methods that work.

In this audiobook, Roth takes you inside the trending world of financial independence and early retirement, giving you the tools both to achieve financial independence and to improve the quality of your everyday life. You'll explore the ins and outs of the "FIRE movement", a collection of ideas and habits that allow people to manage their money so they can quit working while they're young. You'll consider the shockingly simple math behind financial freedom. You'll also examine the philosophy and psychology of how - and why - we spend, save, and invest.

Financial freedom is possible. And no matter what your goals are, these 10 lessons will bring you closer than ever to achieving what that freedom means: happiness, fulfillment, and a rich life.

Great overview of FIRE

I'm already familiar with FIRE but found the first half of the book a refreshing review of the overall concept. The Matrix as an analogy is a good one and I'm glad throughout the book JD consistently makes the unpopular choice to refer to people griping about their circumstances, as legit as they are, as being in the matrix. They have every reason to believe otherwise and so this choice had me respecting the author.

I thought JD's explanation of retirement accounts and index funds to be a bit rushed and weak. The discussion should have remained philosophical and based on history, then counter the matrix as people see it. Instead I felt he went to into the practicality side of things too much, like explaining a ROTH IRA (which narrows your audience to only Americans). To be frank it's just too much to cover, especially over audio. The practical side of things are important but they should have been referred to the tool box resource site instead. Too much attention on how, not enough why.

The only part of the book I didn't like is the morality bit in the last two chapters. You're not obligated to be reborn as a phoenix and become a community leader or volunteer or whatever because you've saved a lot of money. Lifestyle and behaviour don't work that way anyways, it seems he's suggesting that once you hit your number that things will be so much different. The differences are noticable as you increase your savings rate, earn more and invest, not when you reach a financial goal. Many years before early retirement.

Overall good read. 4/5!

Good. US centric

Great break down of the fundamentals.
Sadly, if you're looking for any information on how to invest, or non-USA data, then look elsewhere.
