About this listen

AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

"Wildly entertaining."-The New York Times

"Ingenious."-The Washington Post

New York Times bestselling author Grady Hendrix takes on the haunted house in a thrilling new novel that explores the way your past—and your family—can haunt you like nothing else.

When Louise finds out her parents have died, she dreads going home. She doesn’t want to leave her daughter with her ex and fly to Charleston. She doesn’t want to deal with her family home, stuffed to the rafters with the remnants of her father’s academic career and her mother’s lifelong obsession with puppets and dolls. She doesn’t want to learn how to live without the two people who knew and loved her best in the world.

Most of all, she doesn’t want to deal with her brother, Mark, who never left their hometown, gets fired from one job after another, and resents her success. Unfortunately, she’ll need his help to get the house ready for sale because it’ll take more than some new paint on the walls and clearing out a lifetime of memories to get this place on the market.

But some houses don’t want to be sold, and their home has other plans for both of them…

Like his novels The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires and The Final Girl Support Group, How to Sell a Haunted House is classic Hendrix: equal parts heartfelt and terrifying—a gripping new read from “the horror master” (USA Today).

What the critics say

“Grady Hendrix’s horror novels are a gateway drug to the genre...By weaving violence, family trauma and humor, Hendrix creates a texture that engages the reader emotionally and viscerally…[a] gripping, wildly entertaining exploration of childhood horrors.” —The New York Times

“It's tempting to point out the balance of horror and humor here, and the commingling of the two really is something else, but the true power behind How to Sell a Haunted House is in its emotionality, the sister-brother dynamic, the family matters. It's life and death in the childhood home, and Hendrix has masterfully rendered the journey from one end to the other.” —Josh Malerman, New York Times bestselling author of Bird Box and Daphne

“A spirited nightmare story about death, but also, what comes after: grief, guilt, family secrets, and estate administration. Oh, also, did I mention the evil puppets?" —Chuck Wendig, New York Times bestselling author of The Book of Accidents

Loved It!

Spooky, suspenseful, fun and touching in parts. I liked the way the narrator did the different voices. Not a serious read but VERY entertaining! Totally worth checking out.

puppets and clowns are creepy

I hated the character Louise but that made the story more interesting because sometimes you were rooting for her and other times against her!

Review

The book started out good. I was waiting and waiting for stuff to finally start happening , once it did - it was alright and then it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. Overall it’s an okay book but I didn’t love it like I had hoped to.

Good if your looking for a light horror type read

At first I wasn’t sure about this book but then I compared it to a zombie movie or Chucky or Gremlins. If you’re ok with that genre, then this was great!

Slow but worth the read

It’s very slow paced but when the story does get going it is really good. Not my favorite Grady Hendrix book but still enjoyable!

Not my favorite, but still good!

. This one left be a bit stumped. I wanted to adore it, because Wonderful Mr. Hendrix, but I just… didn’t? I still liked it though. Solid 3-star. Here’s why…

…I didn’t love it:
1. The relationship between Mark and Louise. The petty bickering, honestly like 5 year olds?? Got so annoying.
2. See reason 1. It happened SO much that I had to list it twice
3. Some of it just seemed tooooo far fetched. Like yes, I know we’re talking about haunted dolls here. But seriously…

…I loved it:
1. One specific part made my blood run absolutely COLD. My head spun and I was horrified. (
2. I hate hate hate when things happen to peoples eyes. If you have any problems hearing about stuff happening to your eyes, avoid this. I GAGGED listening to some parts. But in a weird way, I loved it because it forced me to have such a strong reaction. Brilliant writing.

It’s so difficult because when it was good, it was SO good. But when it wasn’t… I almost gave up a few times. Listening to this book rather than reading it I think is what saved me from DNF'ing
