Publisher's Summary

The second novel of the galaxy-spanning Sun Eater series merges the best of space opera and epic fantasy, as Hadrian Marlowe continues down a path that can only end in fire.

Hadrian Marlowe is lost.

For half a century, he has searched the farther suns for the lost planet of Vorgossos, hoping to find a way to contact the elusive alien Cielcin. He has not succeeded, and for years has wandered among the barbarian Normans as captain of a band of mercenaries.

Determined to make peace and bring an end to nearly 400 years of war, Hadrian must venture beyond the security of the Sollan Empire and among the Extrasolarians who dwell between the stars. There, he will face not only the aliens he has come to offer peace, but contend with creatures that once were human, with traitors in his midst, and with a meeting that will bring him face to face with no less than the oldest enemy of mankind.

If he succeeds, he will usher in a peace unlike any in recorded history. If he fails...the galaxy will burn.

Could have used some editing

Great story, amazing world building, but got a bit repetitive with some of the historical references.

Thinking about the Roman Empire in space.

This series is just amazing, great action great characters, and some decent hard Sf. Is all good all the time. This second book does not disappoint even a tiny bit. Do yourself a favour and get into this series. The performance is great as well.

Average

It's a decent story. Main character is not likeable at all. He tries to be one thing but is the complete opposite

mediocre at best

The author, from the future, tells us in book 1 that the pale cannot accept peace between equals. And yet, 95% of this book is spent attempting to achieve it. so frustrating to read.

Also, the author has clearly never read much about military tactics either, rendering almost every military encounter absurd. i.e. If the pale don't use shields, why on earth don't they just equip everyone with ranged weaponry and mow them down?

Even if you ignore the existence of ranged weapons, formations and fortifications were hugely important in the time of Roman warfare. but in this book, both the good and bad guys run around disorganized and with no planning all the time. Zero adaptation to anything on either side as well. no debriefings after battles, no mock battles to test tactics, no brainstorming ways to more effectively fight... just mindlessly battling the same way every time.

I thought books 1 and 3 were interesting, but this one was rough to get through.
