Publisher's Summary

Audie Award Finalist, Biography/Memoir, 2014

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

What the critics say

"Narrator Archie Panjabi is an excellent choice to deliver this memoir of the Pakistani girl who stood up to the Taliban. Her voice is youthful, lilting, and buoyant, invoking the key qualities of the now well-known young woman who, at the age of 15, was shot three times in the face by the Taliban because she actively advocated education for girls. Panjabi narrates with vigor; rapid sentences and warm tones evoke Malala's persona. The listener has the feeling of being told this story by Malala herself rather than by an actor, which is the best type of audiobook. Those who want to hear more about Afghanistan, Pakistan's Swat Valley, or the family behind this courageous young person will not be disappointed." (AudioFile Magazine)

A compelling truth of our world

This book is incredibly moving and insightful and brings awareness on how much work in human rights still needs to be done. As a Canadian, it is not lost on me as a reader as to how lucky we are here and the stark constraint of the differing societies.
Thankful to hear of people like the author who are brave enough to speak out.

Poignant and eye opening

I never doubted these stories would be poignant. They were made amazing by a fantastic narrator who brought it to life.

The stories are inspiring, especially how father & daughter fight side by side for equal rights for boys & girls.

I love her personal admiration for Benazir Bhutto, as I remember reading her book years ago and being struck by her story and womens inequality in Pakistan then. It fellt especially touching to listen to this book as women in Iran fight for freedom there.

With young women like Malala, and male allies, I hope to see a better world for girls soon.

I can't rate someone's actual life story!

I guess I did anyway, the only reason I didn't give it a 5 is that it's not a feel good story and I guess when I read a book I like feel good stories. Reality stories are real and aren't always feel good.

Daughter-father bond is strong!

What I loved about this book is the story behind Malala and her father's grit, perseverance, and love for education - girls' education.

It is a very dear topic to my heart.

The narration was done beautifully because I can hear the passion behind every word.

Thank you for this delightful listen!
