About this listen
"It is easier to see the trauma in others than it is in our own lives. It is in reading that we find validation. And in I Know Why She Stayed I had that experience, over and over.”
Lara Lillibridge, author of The Truth About Unringing Phones: Essays on Yearning and Girlish: Growing Up in a Lesbian Home.
From Itch Perfect to the bonds of friendship, two gameshow participants' lives intertwine when they discover a shared trauma that restricted and shaped their futures. One trapped in a financially abusive marriage, the other forced into debt as a child, they begin to unravel the disturbing events of a shared truth: I Know Why She Stayed.

An excellent portrayal of financial abuse and how it keeps women trapped
"I Know Why She Stayed" by Kasey Rogers and K. J. Harrowick, tells two stories of different forms of financially abusive relationships, depicting not only the emotional trauma, but the suffocating financial control that makes it nearly impossible for many women to escape or break free from dire situations that society often misunderstands and thus judges.
iknowwhyshestayed.org states: ‘99% of women worldwide who face domestic violence also endure financial abuse, trapping them in a cycle of dependence and fear. More than fifty thousand women die every year from domestic abuse, yet many feel they have no choice but to stay because leaving means losing everything—‘
- their home, healthcare, food, children’s schools (or sometimes their children), support systems, pet(s), vehicle— the list goes on and on. With no financial resources of their own, leaving is often not even a choice.
What makes "I Know Why She Stayed" so powerful is its unflinching portrayal of the economic realities that keep women tethered to their abusers. It shines a much-needed light on the often-overlooked financial abuse, making this novel not only a compelling read but also an urgent call for awareness, understanding, compassion, and action.
This book is a testament to the resilience of survivors and a sobering reminder of the countless women still trapped in the shadows of domestic violence.
