This story is about an Italian Catholic family that came to America on vacation and never returned to their homeland. When their youngest unwed daughter became pregnant, her family disowned her. It was 1949. Abortions were illegal. She was 17 when she gave birth. She was my mother...This audiobook chronicles the effects the birth of an unwanted child had on three families and three generations. The audiobook tells you about the bad decisions I made along the way, and the price I paid because of them.

"I was one of 28 children born to my dad and his three wives. Indoctrinated to believe that the outside world was evil, and that I resided among the righteous, I was destined to marry a man chosen for me by the Prophet. I would then live in harmony with my sister-wives, bear many children, and obey and serve my future husband in this life and throughout eternity. But my innocence didn't last long." Flora goes on from there to tell the dramatic true story of how she ultimately escaped and has been rescuing women and children from the FLDS.

Publisher's Summary
I Survived is Victoria Cilliers' chilling, eye-opening story of marriage and attempted murder, revealing the truth about a case that made headlines around the world. Soon to be the subject of a major TV documentary.
On Easter Sunday 2015, experienced skydiver Victoria Cilliers undertook a parachute jump, a gift from her husband, British army sergeant Emile Cilliers. Her parachutes failed to open and she plummeted 4,000 feet to the ground, sustaining life-threatening injuries. Miraculously, she survived. Then the police arrived at her door. Someone had tampered with her parachute and they suspected Emile.
In I Survived Victoria describes how she fell for Emile, and how the charming man she thought she knew gradually revealed a darker side, chipping away at her self-worth until she found it impossible to sift truth from lies. Can she really believe that her husband – the father of their two young children – tried to kill her? As more shocking revelations come to light, and she has to face his trial and relentless media scrutiny, she struggles to come to terms with the past. Even a guilty verdict does not free her because Emile is not ready to let her go . . .
Powerful and honest, this is the story of a woman who was put through hell and yet found the strength to forge a new life for herself and her children.

A story of abuse and survival
If you want to know what emotional abuse, coercive control and gaslighting looks like this true story will give you a up close look in details. It can be frustrating at times to read from a outsider wanting to judge "why doesn't see he tried to murder her" but this book perfectly spells out the emotional journey she had go through of healing from the abuse and trauma to see full picture. It's very clear Victoria was trying to survive from day to day after the murder attempts. I hope anyone who judged her feels shame and regret at doing so.

Awesome book!
I really enjoyed listening to this book. It’s hard to believe she didn’t realize what her husband was doing, how she could even think he might be innocent and then continued having a relationship after he was sentenced to 18 years in jail before she finally saw what a man he was.

Fascinating story
This is a super well written biography!!
I’ll admit, I often get bored by autobiographical works but this one has me hooked right from the beginning!
It also helps that the narrator had a really lovely voice.

What An Amazing Book
I bought this book right after I ran to the Women's Shelter in February. I stopped listening because it was too triggering. I started listening again last night (June 17th, 2022) and I was listening until 4 am! Ms. Cilliers writes like she's having a conversation with me. She unveiled everything I felt about myself, and she deftly described the slow descent into hell that abusers take us through. It's not a punch in the eye, and they try to kill you. It's years of gaslighting. This book validated everything I am feeling today. Before my husband threw me out, I had this constant, nagging thought in my head "he's gonna kill you". I thought " what rubbish". After listening to Ms. Cilliers' book, I know I was lucky to be taken away from him. Ms. Cilliers also tells of how to survive with small children. To me, she is one of the invaluable female voices to tell her story and empower women to leave their abusive husbands. Thank you.

Interesting
I wasn't expecting anything when I purchased this book.
I feel bad that she went through all the struggles that she did; I've seen this behavior and pattern from a few people that are struggling with domestic abuse; it's sad and repetitive; like she has blinders and you refuse to believe that what you see is true.
I didn't like the performance, at times she sounded like "hey google", I tried to finish it, but I fell asleep, then part way through I just couldn't listen anymore, it felt it was dragged out when it could have been ended sooner.
perhaps just not my cuppa tea.
