About this listen
The third novel by the phenomenally talented Alice Oseman, the author of the 2021 YA Book Prize winning Loveless, Solitaire and graphic novel series Heartstopper – now a major Netflix series.
For Angel Rahimi life is about one thing: The Ark – a pop-rock trio of teenage boys who are taking the world by storm. Being part of The Ark’s fandom has given her everything she loves – her friend Juliet, her dreams, her place in the world.
Jimmy Kaga-Ricci owes everything to The Ark. He’s their frontman – and playing in a band with his mates is all he ever dreamed of doing.
But dreams don’t always turn out the way you think and when Jimmy and Angel are unexpectedly thrust together, they find out how strange and surprising facing up to reality can be.
A funny, wise, and heartbreakingly true coming of age novel. I Was Born for This is a stunning reflection of modern teenage life, and the power of believing in something – especially yourself.

Love it!!
So interesting!! I have never thought of boy bands or fan girls, so this was an eye opening experience but I love all of Alice Oseman's writing and this did not disappoint. Especially liked the trans main character.

Story
engaging storytelling & cheesy wholesome content
I think the story captures teen angst really well - And specifically what it means to be part of a fandom and to meet your heroes in real life. Also really appreciate when LGBTQ characters are introduced casually and not going through their “gay crisis-coming out moment.”
Expect characters that have cringe moments that only make you root for them even harder.
I love multidimensional characters and really appreciated that the side characters were written this way. Also love the dual Perspectives of Angel and Jimmy throughout the book and the ways that their paths intertwine.
Overall, the dialogue is witty and the narration is entertaining. The story was so engaging that I had a hard time “putting it down”.
