About this listen

A new kind of bighearted audiobook about being seen for who you really are.

Amanda Hardy is the new girl in school. Like anyone else, all she wants is to make friends and fit in. But Amanda is keeping a secret, and she's determined not to get too close to anyone.

But when she meets sweet, easygoing Grant, Amanda can't help but start to let him into her life. As they spend more time together, she realizes just how much she is losing by guarding her heart. She finds herself yearning to share with Grant everything about herself, including her past. But Amanda's terrified that once she tells him the truth, he won't be able to see past it. Because the secret that Amanda's been keeping? It's that at her old school, she used to be Andrew. Will the truth cost Amanda her new life and her new love?

If I Was Your Girl is a universal story about feeling different - and a love story that everyone will root for.

What the critics say

"[Narrator Samia] Mounts eloquently depicts the changes that take place after Andrew’s surgery - when he becomes Amanda.... Mounts expresses the delight Amanda feels as girlfriends accept her and gentle, thoughtful Grant falls in love with her. Mounts provides a bittersweet tone as Amanda blossoms with the tender feelings of first love even as she fears revealing her secret. Her feelings are juxtaposed with her father’s fear for her safety amid the narrow-mindedness of the small Southern town where they live, which Mounts suggests through the judicious use of regional accents." Heartwarming

I loved this audio book, really couldn’t stop listening till the end. Even then I was left wondering what happened to her and grant at the end. I hope that he was able to see past what happened and give this girl a chance at a happy fulfilling relationship. Wish there was a second part tbh. But defo was an amazing book x

Hits close to home

As a person who has struggled with their gender for a long time, Amanda's thoughts and feelings strike extraordinarily close to home for me. The inner turmoil of trying to not only survive but also embrace who she is, is one that i still struggle with today. Its nice to hear a story that reflects the realities of being transgender but also offers hope, happiness , and acceptance at the end. i loved this story and highly recommend it.

I loved it

I feel like a lot of media feature g trans characters fetishize dysphoria and centre the characters hardships around that, this book focused on the social aspects of living a life as a passing trans women, and I thought that was lovely.

Enjoyable story & characters

I was looking for LGBTQ stories and stumbled across this one without really knowing anything about it or the author. I don't listen to a lot of books (once every few years), but was pleasantly surprised with this one and hooked after 1 chapter.
Would love to hear/read more of the authors work.

A beautiful mixture of the reality of being trans and the amount of fiction it takes for the cisgendered population to comprehend life of people different from them

Very moving and heartfelt. Made me cry.

I too am transgender and can see myself as the protagonist in this story. My experiences and journey almost mirrors hers struggles and pain. It is nice to feel like I'm not alone in this. Not many stories are told about our community. Great read/listen.
